Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that assists individuals from all walks of life to provide them with a home in a neighborhood where they can thrive. Habitat home owners, also known as partner families, aren’t given a hand out, but a hand up. They have to qualify, put in sweat equity and be able to pay a reasonable, yet affordable mortgage which has a no to low interest rate.

As of January 2013, Habitat for Humanity has successfully built 57 homes. By the end of this year, seven more families will be placed in Habitat homes throughout Lake County. Habitat for Humanity International has built over 500,000 homes and served 2.5 million people worldwide.

“It’s an especially exciting time for the local Habitat Affiliate. It’s an honor to play a small role in changing people’s lives for the better. We are looking forward to offering this event to the public for the third year in a row. It’s a fantastic opportunity for individuals, families and friends to learn more about what Habitat offers the community and how they can make a difference. The monies raised at this event will go toward building future homes in Lake County in the years to come,” Habitat for Humanity of Northwest Indiana Board of Directors Vice President and 2011-2013 Race Director Nichole DeMario said.
