The Fuller Center for Housing of Gary (FCH Gary), in partnership with the City of Gary, will host a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday, May 22, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at 2456 Jackson St. This event is being held in conjunction with the City’s “Jackson Street of Dreams” program and FCH Gary’s plans to build 2 new homes and rehabilitate 2 homes in the 2300 and 2400 blocks of Jackson Street.
“We are extremely excited about the upcoming makeover that this area will receive,” said Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. “We intend to continue our work with the Fuller Center and identify more opportunities to build and rehab homes across the city.”
The Fuller Center for Housing of Gary is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that operates as an affiliate or Covenant Partner with the national organization of The Fuller Center for Housing, headquartered in Americus, Georgia. Following the organization’s mission, FCH Gary seeks to eradicate poverty housing by promoting partnerships with individuals and community groups to build and rehabilitate homes for people in need. The Jackson Street location is the first of many to be identified for this revitalization project.
Three-bedroom homes will be offered to qualified buyers to purchase with no interest loans, managed by The Fuller Center for Housing of Gary. The homes are scheduled for completion in late August, 2014. Prospective buyers will be asked to complete an application process in addition to a financial literacy/homeowner readiness program.
Volunteers who have worked on other Fuller Center projects across the country will be on-hand to assist in completing the construction along with local volunteers. Persons interested in becoming volunteers are encouraged to get involved in this citywide effort to rebuild the neighborhoods of Gary. All skill levels are needed in a variety of disciplines, including plumbing, electrical, painting, hanging drywall, roofing and much more. Construction will be supervised by qualified personnel, and unskilled volunteers are also welcome.
