GreatNews.Life Student Voices: Crown Point yearbook staff set to go to Philadelphia

What’s recently happened?

This past month, students at Crown Point High School participated in the Preliminary SAT (PSAT), a standardized test that serves as both a practice for the SAT and a qualifying exam for the National Merit Scholarship Program. With its focus on critical reading, math, and writing skills, the PSAT is an essential stepping stone for high school students preparing for college.

As students complete the PSAT, they will receive their scores, which will help guide their future study plans and SAT preparations. For many, this test is the first step toward understanding the college admissions process and identifying the schools that align with their aspirations.

Overall, the PSAT is a vital part of the academic experience for Crown Point students, providing them with insights into their readiness for college and the potential for scholarship opportunities. As they navigate this important milestone, the Crown Point community continues to rally around them, ensuring they have the support needed to succeed.

What’s coming up?

On November 6, Crown Point’s yearbook staff will go on an exciting journey to Philadelphia for the annual National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) convention. This event will bring together student journalists and yearbook advisors from across the country, offering a unique opportunity for learning, networking, and creative inspiration.

The NSPA convention is renowned for its extensive workshops, keynote speakers, and panel discussions, all focused on the latest trends in journalism and yearbook design. Crown Point’s yearbook staff will attend various sessions that covered topics such as photography techniques, layout design, and effective storytelling.

“I am so excited to go to Philadelphia because the journalism conventions are always super fun, and we get to learn a bunch of new tricks and techniques for writing, photography, design, and all the different sides of journalism. I am also excited to hang out with my friends during the trip because fun new memories are always made when we go on journalism trips,” Senior Crown Town Media and Social Media Editor Makenna Carmichael said.

In addition to educational sessions, the convention provides ample opportunities for networking. Students have the chance to connect with industry professionals, fellow yearbook staff, and advisors from different schools. These interactions can foster a sense of community and shared passion among young journalists.

With its sights set on the convention, the Crown Point yearbook staff is ready to take its work to the next level and create a yearbook that truly captures the spirit and achievements of its classmates.

Staff spotlight:

Hannah Sanchez, a passionate math teacher at Crown Point, is making a significant impact both in the classroom and beyond. Known for her engaging teaching style and commitment to student success, she also plays a vital role as a co-sponsor of the Key Club, a student-led organization focused on community service and leadership development.

“I like math because it makes so much sense. There is always a certain answer and there are always multiple ways to get it,” Sanchez said.

Having recently joined the teaching staff, Sanchez is excited to share her love for math with her students. She employs creative teaching methods that encourage participation and critical thinking, making math approachable and enjoyable.

“The classrooms I am in are pretty laid back. Mr. Nicholas Lewandowski and I have this nice banter where we go back and forth when we teach the kids. We’re both up there a lot, but we kind of go off of each other when we teach them. With Mrs. Erin Rawls it is kind of the same thing. Overall it has been really fun,” Sanchez said.

In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Sanchez is eager to contribute to the school community as a co-sponsor of the Key Club. The organization focuses on developing leadership skills while giving back through various service projects.

“I loved how dedicated the kids were to the club and how excited they were to do it. They did a lot of activities and all the kids wanted to participate and I just wanted to be a part of something like that for those kinds of kids,” Sanchez said.

With a bright future ahead, Sanchez is excited to continue growing as a teacher and leader at Crown Point, inspiring her students both in the classroom and beyond. As the year unfolds, her contributions are sure to enrich the educational experience and foster a sense of community among students.

Student spotlight:

Crown Point Senior Mackenzie Schubert has achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a spot on the prestigious All-State Cheer Team. This recognition highlights her dedication, talent, and hard work in the competitive world of cheerleading.

Schubert’s journey to the All-State team has been marked by years of commitment to cheerleading. From an early age, she developed a passion for the sport, training diligently to improve her skills in stunting, tumbling, and choreography. Her dedication has not only made her a standout performer but has also inspired her teammates.

“My mother and sister were big influences in my life and they introduced me to cheerleading,” Schubert said.

The All-State Cheer Team selection process is highly competitive, requiring athletes to demonstrate exceptional skills and teamwork. Schubert participated in rigorous tryouts, showcasing her abilities in front of a panel of judges. Her impressive performance, combined with her positive attitude and leadership qualities, set her apart from the competition.

“It was insane when I found out that I had made the team, because personally I didn’t think I was going to make it. I was just trying it out like it was a fun thing and because I am a senior, but I always dreamed of making it. My coach actually surprised me at one of my practices with flowers and when she told me I made it I was so shocked I couldn’t say anything,” Schubert said.

With her determination and passion for cheerleading, there’s no doubt that Schubert will continue to inspire her peers and represent her school with pride. The Crown Point community eagerly anticipates her journey and celebrates her remarkable accomplishment as a testament to hard work and dedication in the world of cheerleading.
