Staff spotlight:
Brenda Vargas is a Spanish teacher at CPHS. She is a favorite teacher of many and has a deep appreciation for her job. This appreciation stems from when Vargas was young.
“I actually wanted to be a lawyer when I was young, but my experience in school with other teachers really motivated me to be a teacher that I would have wanted,” Vargas said. “When I first came to the U.S., I didn’t know much English, and I had teachers who stayed after school and even met with me on weekends to help me out. That really impacted me.”
Teaching is a job that Vargas sees herself doing for the rest of her life. She works hard to push her students and teach them new things. Teaching students an entirely new language, however, does not come without its own challenges.
“I’ve always thought about whether or not there were other things I could see myself doing, but I know that being in the classroom with all my students is really what I’m passionate about,” Vargas said. “My goal for this school year is to speak more Spanish. I always start off strict but tend to get more lenient throughout the year. Speaking more Spanish with and to my students is really my biggest goal.”
Overall, Vargas has created an atmosphere for her students that makes learning fun and unique. Learning a new language can be a difficult challenge for many, but teachers like Vargas make learning much easier.
Student spotlight:
Abby Vester, a sophomore at CPHS, has recently turned her hobby into an important part of her high school career. Advancing in tennis has given Vester a newfound drive. The determination needed for the sport is reflected in Vester’s personality.
“I originally started to play tennis after a friend suggested that she and I join the camp in middle school. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made, and I found a new love for the sport,” Vester said. “I decided to stick with tennis because it keeps me fit and gives me drive.”
Vester’s tennis career thus far has been filled with many challenges but also many fulfilling moments. For students, sports can be a way to keep busy. The team atmosphere is what keeps the sport alive for Vester.
“Another reason I stayed in tennis is all the new people I met through the sport. I love the team, and we have a lot of fun together and cheer one another on. A difficult part about tennis is mentally playing the game. It’s important not to let lost points get to you during matches.” Vester said.
Many students like Vester see sports as a way to better themselves and stay fit. Tennis has been beneficial for Vester and has allowed many new experiences. The exhilarating experience of playing a sport like tennis is what keeps Vester motivated.
