GreatNews.Life Region Sports Recap: January 9 – January 15

While the inclement weather may have put a pause on sports in the Region last weekend, things are starting to heat up again as the snow melts away. With some of the most competitive teams and enthusiastic fans, there’s plenty to be proud of living in Northwest Indiana.

Region Sports Update

The Region is filled with amazing athletes/teams across the board, but here are a couple I would like to highlight this week!

In the Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC), there are two teams on top of the standings. Those two teams are the Valparaiso Vikings Girls Basketball team and the Lake Central Indians Girls Basketball team. There is a third team to look out for though.

The Chesterton Trojans Girls Basketball team is currently sitting at third place in the DAC standings with a record of 9-3 at home and 5-2 away

They are 16-6 overall and are currently on a seven-game win-streak!

Keyshawn Mitchell of Merrillville High School has had a great part of Merrillville’s success so far this season.

Mitchell is currently averaging 14 points a game with an extremely efficient 63% field goal percentage.

The Pirates Boys Basketball team is 7-4 and 1-0 in conference play.

Next Week in Sports

On Friday, January 19, the (7-6) Michigan City High School Wolves Boys basketball team travels to play the (8-5) La Porte High School Slicers Boys Basketball team in a DAC affair.

The Wolves average 66.5 points per game

The Slicers average 57.1 points per game

The (3-13) Michigan City Girls Wolves Basketball team also travels to La Porte to take on the 2-17 Slicers. These games will be a boy-girl varsity doubleheader.

On Saturday, January 20, Boys Swim teams will be competing in the Duneland Athletic Conference Swim Invite.

On Sunday, January 21, the 49th Annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Tournament Pairings Show takes place at 4 p.m. CT. Girls Basketball teams await the brackets and who they will match up against for Sectional play.

Of course, none of these games would be possible without the help of many people behind the scenes. With the Girls Basketball state championship quickly approaching, we’d like to shout out some of the awesome coaches who help their teams play their A-game.
