Goodwill Nurse-Family Partnership Lake County Celebrates Black Breastfeeding Week 2019

Goodwill Nurse-Family Partnership Lake County Celebrates Black Breastfeeding Week 2019

The week of August 25-31, 2019 was dedicated to African-American mothers and families to promote the positive effects breastfeeding has on an infant’s health and in reducing infant mortality rates, which affects African-American infants more than any other ethnic group.

In efforts to help address these racial disparities when it comes to rates of pregnancy-related deaths, premature births, low-weight births, and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), Goodwill Nurse-Family Partnership Lake County supported our community by providing breastfeeding information by a Certified Lactation Counselor and free breastfeeding supplies.

To promote and support breastfeeding in three of Lake County’s cities with the highest infant mortality rate, Nurse-Family Partnership provided these services at the following locations on Thursday, August 29, 2019, Marram Health Center in Gary, on Friday, August 30, 2019, at Healthy East Chicago and the Women’s Care Center in Hammond.

Breastfeeding is better for babies in that it leads to better digestion, production of antibodies, and reduced risk of infections and childhood obesity.

Let’s continue to push for breastfeeding promotion and support in our communities and neighborhoods to give our children a healthier and brighter future. Thank you to all who supported this effort and helped make it all possible!
