The course at Youche Country Club in Crown Point was full of local residents and advocates of the YMCA playing for a worthy cause on a cool Monday morning. With 104 players in groups of four, the day proved to be a great time to get out and play a little golf.
The game was played in a four-person scramble, where each team’s players hit from the tee, then the best of the four shots determined where the players would hit from next. All of the players enjoyed a box lunch before heading out to start their game.
The golf outing wasn’t just a day of fun, it also benefited the Griffith and Southlake/Crossroads YMCA. With such a great cause that many can relate to, it was a great opportunity for players to give back to their community.
"All the proceeds of this outing went to help the folks that are under our financial assistance program. These proceeds help families that can’t afford memberships, our programs, or our after-school care. The profits will help subsidize those folks memberships,” said Carl Zurbriggen, Executive Director at the Griffith YMCA.
The Crossroads YMCA has three branches including: Southlake YMCA, Griffith YMCA and the Hammond YMCA. The proceeds from the event benefited all three of the branches to help with those needing financial assistance within those communities.
“It’s great to be here helping our communities out. We are providing services to families throughout Lake County and children who are in need,” said Chris Maller, Executive Director at the Southlake YMCA.
Throughout the course of the game, participants had an opportunity to win some prizes through raffles and door prizes. While playing, they could also win for closest to the pin, longest drive, closest second shot, and longest putt.
“The whole reason I got into the Y was to give back to my community. One of the best ways to do that is to help the people that can’t afford to participate in the things they’d like to do at the Y,” said Zurbriggen.
A day of golf, but most importantly, a day devoted to providing beneficial funds for the Crossroads YMCAs resulted in a successful and fun day at the Youche Country Club.
