If you mention “Michigan City” to anyone in the area, odds are their minds will automatically be drawn to images of the iconic lighthouse that sits at the end of the pier at Washington Park Beach and Marina. The 49-foot tall structure has stood the test of time for well over 100 years and is one of just five lighthouses in the entire state of Indiana. Each year, thousands of people visit the site to enjoy fishing, snap a few photos, or simply sit and watch the sunset over Lake Michigan.

But there’s another one nearby. The Old Lighthouse Museum offers visitors a chance to learn about Indiana maritime history, tour some of their featured exhibits, and even climb up the tower to the lantern room.

Nearby, beach visitors cross the Franklin Street bridge which often raises during the summer months to allow sailboats to pass through as they make their way from nearby lake view apartments and past the marina before finally heading out into the open waters of Lake Michigan.

Downtown Michigan City offers its own variety of plentiful sights, beginning with its downtown Art District, which boasts the Artspace Uptown Artist Lofts building, several galleries, local restaurants, vintage and boutique shops, and more. Pedestrians can stop and enjoy the variety of art installations located on several corners in the area.

Moving further away from the lake and city, visitors and local residents often spend their days enjoying leisurely hikes through one of several local wooded areas, such as Ruby Woods or Karwick Nature Park, or - one of our personal favorites - Creek Ridge County Park, with its well-marked trails and babbling creek. It’s a favorite for a quick getaway to recharge your batteries or enjoy some birdwatching.
