Since 1935, General Insurance Services (GIS) has been taking care of insurance needs for many businesses, municipalities, and organizations within La Porte and Porter counties. So when they expanded to Lake County and opened the doors of their new Hobart branch, they put a dynamic duo in place to ensure success for customers and the community.
Nicole Van Duyn, Business Risk Advisor, and Candace Arvin, Employee Benefits Advisor, bring their own expertise to meet the needs of local organizations and carry on the excellent GIS legacy of excellence in service.
“What really makes Nicole and I a dynamic duo is that we work to understand each business and craft customized solutions that are best suited to their unique needs,” Arvin said. “Nicole has the Property & Casualty Insurance License, which allows her to work on the commercial lines side offering things like general liability, work comp, or cyber protections. I, on the other hand, have a Life & Health Insurance License and specialize in working with employers to craft an employee benefits package that is effective for their members, but also efficient for their bottom line.”
Van Duyn came to GIS almost two years ago with a solid sales background and experience working with local businesses, giving her a firm understanding of how to uncover their needs.
“I found that my throughout my career, my passion ignites when working with businesses - seeing what their needs are and how I could help them make improvements. That’s what really drew me to this role and General Insurance Services as a company,” she said. “My job is to advise businesses on how to proactively manage their risks to protect their company should the unexpected happen. Every business is organized so differently that every day is a new challenge, which keeps things fun.”
While Arvin has been with GIS for just around a year, she brought with her a good amount of experience and passion for serving region businesses.
“My goal is to fully understand each business that I represent. How did they get their start and what is important to them? What are their company values and culture like? And then how do we craft and employee benefits package that conveys those values to their employees helping them to recruit and retain top talent,” Arvin said.
Working together, and alongside the extended team at GIS, the team prides themselves on their one of a kind Risk Resource Process.
“Our approach helps business owners improve their overall risk profile which, in return, lowers their long-term risk, saves them money, and makes local businesses safer, healthier, and more profitable. We think differently, so we act differently,” Arvin said.
“We take an entirely different approach than most in the insurance industry. Our goal is to truly be that advisor by understanding our clients’ strengths, struggles and goals while developing a plan that will positively impact them long term. We provide tremendous value, not quotes,” Van Duyn said.
They both are passionate about building strong companies and it shows in their volunteer work as well.
“We serve on boards and are involved with many different non-profits as a way to give back to the community as much as possible,” Van Duyn said. “Our mission at GIS is to ‘secure the futures of the communities that we serve’. That’s something that is really important to us, as we both have backgrounds with non-profit organizations. Being involved in the community and engaging with local businesses is our priority.”
Van Duyn is involved with Hobart Kiwanis, Secretary of Merrillville Rotary Club and serves on the Hospitality and Tourism Management Advisory Board at Purdue University Northwest. Arvin has been involved with several local chambers of commerce and is a board member with the Hobart Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s really exciting because we get to work closely with the City of Hobart and Hobart Parks and have a hand in helping build a vibrant community,” Arvin said.
With the opening of the new office at 405 Main Street, right in the heart of downtown Hobart, Arvin and Van Duyn are looking forward to meeting the needs of the Hobart and Lake County community.
“We’re excited to make our impact in Lake County. We feel that a lot of businesses could benefit from our services. We want to be there for them in an advisory role, and do our part to ensure Lake County continues to grow and thrive. We’re excited to be a part of that,” Van Duyn said.
