The Gary Community School Corporation (GCSC) is excited to announce that Frankie Woods McCullough Academy has re-opened just three weeks after an EF-1 tornado caused significant damage on March 19 to the gymnasium roof and disrupted normal operations.
Because the tornado hit days before spring break, district officials were able to enact a plan to maintain continuity of education for children. Administrators, teachers and staff worked collaboratively to swiftly relocate operations to the Gary Area Career Center, where students completed learning while repairs ensued.
“This return is more than just coming back to a building, it’s a celebration of the power of community and collaboration," said Dr. Yvonne Stokes, Superintendent of the Gary Community School Corporation. "From the rapid response of our district staff and educators to the unwavering support of our families, the City of Gary and community members, this shared effort highlights what’s possible when we come together.”
During the temporary relocation, students in grades K-2 were accommodated in the Career Center’s industrial clinic, while students in grades 3-5 adjusted to other classrooms in the building. Teachers and staff created welcoming environments in unfamiliar settings and ensured students felt supported academically and emotionally during the transition. The district provided additional transportation support for families whose scholars normally walk to school.
Frankie Woods McCullough Academy Principal Sharmayne McKinley expressed her excitement about the school’s reopening, saying, “It feels incredible to see our students and staff back in their familiar classrooms. It’s clear that this place is more than walls and desks; for our school family, it’s home.”
While students and staff have returned, gymnasium repairs are ongoing. The affected area has been safely cordoned off, and students will temporarily hold physical education classes in the school multi-purpose room. The repairs are expected to continue into the summer, with safety remaining the district’s top priority.
The GCSC extends is extending its thanks to all those who made this return possible.
“Today, we celebrate not just the reopening of a school, but the spirit of unity that kept our school community going,” added Stokes. “We are proud to continue our mission of providing a safe and nurturing educational environment where all of our students can thrive.”
