Minimally invasive methods allow for targeted treatment closer to home

A Franciscan Health Olympia Fields surgeon is offering patients struggling with undiagnosed, unresolved and complex issues of the esophagus and stomach hope for relief with a new clinic in the South Suburbs.

Specialty Physicians of Illinois, LLC General Surgeon Dr. Lubomyr Boris, DO, recently launched a comprehensive Foregut Clinic at his Franciscan Health Olympia Fields office aimed at tackling these cases using state-of-the-art technologies typically only found at university medical centers. Dr. Boris uses the tools to identify and treat the root causes of their issues.

“What makes our clinic unique is that patients don’t have to travel far for this level of care or wait months for a consultation,” Dr. Boris said.

Among the cutting-edge tools employed are high-resolution esophageal manometry, which measures esophageal pressure to help identify motility disorders, or problems with food moving through the digestive system. Technologies to measure acid levels, such as the pH Impedance and the pH Bravo capsule, provide clearer pictures of conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other reflux-related ailments.

Dr. Boris is an expert in the field, having spent years analyzing and interpreting thousands of these tests, publishing in numerous medical journals and speaking at multiple symposiums. This expertise allows him to treat conditions that other specialists might otherwise find challenging.

His comprehensive approach has attracted patients who previously felt limited to medication management for issues like chronic reflux.

“It’s always satisfying to see how relieved patients are when we can finally explain why they feel the way they do,” Dr. Boris said. “Knowing the ‘why’ behind their symptoms allows us to move forward with effective, often minimally invasive treatments … I often remind patients that they don’t have to accept diminished quality of life or endless medications.”

Dr. Boris’ Foregut Clinic is located at 3700 W. 203rd St., Suite 201A on the campus of Franciscan Health Olympia Fields. For more information or to make an appointment, please call (708) 679-2120.
