Emmy-winning TV host, nutritionist Dr. Sandy Goldberg headlines 13th annual Share the Love fundraiser

Emmy Award-winning clinical nutritionist and TV host Dr. Sandy Goldberg headlined the Cancer Resource Centre’s 13th annual Share the Love fundraiser. Herself a breast cancer survivor, Goldberg is also the founder of A Silver Lining Foundation, which helps ensure that all women can receive timely mammograms.

With more than 300 attendees, Share the Love is one of the largest fundraisers of the year for the Cancer Resource Centre, which is a program of the Community Cancer Research Foundation. The Centre offers support groups, mind-body-spirit classes, educational resources, and more, all free of charge to those fighting cancer, as well as their families.

“We serve all of Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland—it doesn’t matter which hospital you’re being treated at, everything the Cancer Resource Centre offers is completely free of charge,” said Anthony Andello, director of the Cancer Resource Centre. “Since we opened in 2003, we’ve had over 54,000 participants come through our doors. It’s a place where they can feel welcomed, where they don’t need to feel judged for having cancer.”

Goldberg is known around the Region mostly for the “Food for Thought” series on NBC 5, but won an Emmy for a documentary on her battle with cancer titled “One Woman’s Story.” According to Goldberg, sharing her story with those battling cancer is among the most important things she can do.

“Something I often say is that we are all members of a club that we didn’t want to join,” Goldberg said. “The diagnosis of cancer, awful as it is, is in many ways a unifying experience. Those of us who’ve gone through that dark time know what it’s like to go through treatment, to worry not just for ourselves and loved ones as well. It doesn’t matter where you live or what you do in life, once you’re a member of that club you’re in it with absolutely everybody else.”

A Chicago native, Goldberg moved to Valparaiso just over a year ago. When she settled in, one of the first things she did was scour the Region for every cancer survivor resource she could find.

“We immediately heard about the Cancer Resource Centre, and went over to visit,” she said. “It was such a wonderful experience. One of the most essential resources to anyone who’s gone through the fire of a fight with cancer is knowing that there’s a place we can go to not just to be with other survivors, but to enjoy services that can allow us a certain amount of peace and camaraderie. ”

Share the Love gave attendees a chance to tour different booths offering art, jewelry, foods and more. All proceeds from the event went directly back to the Cancer Resource Centre, allowing it to continue providing services free of charge.

“This event is always fantastic, it’s incredible to hear so many great speakers,” said Amber Kindt, Community Cancer Research Foundation administrator. “Their stories, cancer-related or not, have always been amazing. It’s so special seeing all these women and men get together in the middle of a workday and take part in something to support the Cancer Resource Centre.”
