As the summer season slips away, the Lakes of Valparaiso gave its pool one final hurrah before closing for the season by letting its four-legged residents dive in. On September 16, the Lakes of Valparaiso kept up its annual Puppy Plunge event by letting residents bring their dogs down to the pool for the final swim before the pool closes for the winter.
“We were looking to incorporate our pets and have a little bit of fun,” said Jennifer Coleman, community manager at the Lakes of Valparaiso.
The Puppy Plunge is a great way for the Lakes of Valparaiso to develop its community, offering residents an opportunity to get to know their neighbors while the dogs play in the pool. It also encourages some exercise for a man’s best friend.
“We have a lot of pet owners that look forward to this every year,” said Coleman. “It's become a tradition, especially for our residents who have been here for several years. They bring friends or family; they get out their cameras. I think everybody just enjoys seeing the animals, whether it's their own pet or other pets, being able to interact and engage with one another, and being able to get in the pool and swim. It brings joy to everybody.”
The Puppy Plunge is more than just a chance for the dogs to swim. It demonstrates the Lakes of Valparaiso’s ability to meet resident needs and desires in a way that’s fun for everyone. It was clear that the dogs were having a blast diving into the pool, and the owners couldn’t hide their smiles as they interacted with their community.
Coleman hasn’t had the opportunity to attend a Puppy Plunge, but even in the weeks leading up to the event, she can feel the excitement radiating from residents.
“I really enjoy seeing the pictures and the camaraderie among the residents and the pets,” she said. “Seeing the excitement of the residents that are able to bring their pets and attend is what I like, what I get the most joy out of seeing.”
The Puppy Plunge isn’t the only event the Lakes of Valparaiso hosts that welcomes our furry friends. The Lakes of Valparaiso tries to make pets welcome at as many events as possible. Additionally, amenities such as a dog park, pet washing station, and walking trails make four-legged living easy at the Lakes of Valparaiso.
“All but one of our apartment buildings are pet friendly, so we definitely try to incorporate our pets into the resident functions,” Coleman said. “We have several residents that come in daily because we have various treats in the office and their pets know that. On any given day, we probably have anywhere from five to 10 pets that come in with their owners just to get a dog treat. We've set that standard that we love our pets here, and people know that.”
