The Crown Point Police Department is pleased to announce the return of its Citizens Police Academy. Applications for the academy open today, Monday, Aug. 12. This is the eighth year the police department has held the academy, which receives dozens of interested applicants annually.
The academy will be held for 10 weeks from 6-8 p.m. on Thursdays. The first class will be held Thursday, Sept. 5. The final class will be a graduation ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 14. The academy will take various field trips during the course, however, class will primarily be held at Bulldog Park, located at 183 S. West St.
This course includes:
- An overview of the Crown Point Police Department
- Lessons covering Indiana criminal and traffic law
- Simulator scenarios at the MAAC
- Patrol tactics demonstrations
- A four-hour ride-a-long
- Presentations from Ben’s Blue Bags, CPPD K-9 Unit and NW Regional SWAT
- A tour of the Lake County 911 Center
“The citizens police academy is a great way for our community members to see what it’s like to be a police officer,” Police Chief Ryan S. Patrick said. “The course provides participants a hand-on, first person perspective on policing and law enforcement in Crown Point and Northwest Indiana.”
Class participants must be at least 18 years of age and a Crown Point resident. Applicants must have a clean criminal record to participate in the academy. Preference is given to applicants who have not attended in the past.
