Motorists can now drive green with confidence in the City of Crown Point.
In late 2022, the City of Crown Point unveiled two new level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers in the city.
Both chargers are 40 amps and offer two charging ports. One station is located in the parking lot of the Crown Point Police Department, 124 N. East St. The other is located near the maintenance shop at the Crown Point Sportsplex, 1313 E. North St.
“I am excited the City of Crown Point is joining other municipalities in Northwest Indiana by offering electric vehicle charging stations,” Crown Point Mayor Pete Land said. “These two charging stations offer visitors an opportunity to recharge while enjoying all the amenities our city has to offer.”
Currently, motorists can recharge free of charge. The nominal fee for the charging stations will be considered by the Crown Point City Council at its Feb. 6 meeting. The fee — 33 cents per kilowatt hour — was approved by the Board of Public Works and Safety at its Jan. 18 meeting.
The City of Crown Point has been working with Drive Clean Indiana through the Northwest Indiana Regional Planning Commission Green Fleet Program on building partnerships to advance affordable, efficient and clean transportation fuels and technologies throughout the community.
In 2020, Drive Clean Indiana partners, including the City of Crown Point, were awarded funds from the Indiana Volkswagen grants to bring electric vehicle charging stations to Northern Indiana.
The Indiana Volkswagen grants are funded through an executive order signed by Indiana Gov. Eric J. Holcomb in October 2017 that outlined steps to distribute Indiana’s $40.9 million portion of the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust Fund, which was formed following a settlement between the U.S. Department of Justice and the Volkswagen Corporation for its violation of the federal Clean Air Act.
The City worked with Drive Clean Indiana, Ozinga Energy, NIPSCO, AmpedUp, and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management to see the project through.
“The installation of the two electric vehicle charging stations in Crown Point is the product of another successful partnership through the Northern Indiana Green Fleet Program,” Drive Clean Indiana Executive Director Carl Lisek said.
