Crown Point Breaks Ground on New Skate Park

Crown Point Breaks Ground on New Skate Park

A new skate park is rolling into Crown Point.

On Monday, Oct. 7, Mayor Pete Land and City staff broke ground on the new park, located on the south side of the Sportsplex, near the Sparta Dome.

The new park will offer something for all ages, Land said during Monday’s groundbreaking.

“Everybody has different interests. Whether you are a festival person, you’re a senior citizen taking advantage of those programs or into sports, there’s a role for everyone in Crown Point,” Land said. “It’s our job as a City to be all-inclusive and provide as many opportunities and options as we can.”

In 2022, the City received a $2.81 million grant from the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation to transform Sauerman Woods Park. Roughly $1 million from the grant was earmarked for the construction of a new skate park.

“When we went and pitched this idea to the Foundation, they were not only receptive, but were eager to be able to help our community with yet another financial package. Without them, this project may not be a reality,” Land said.

Land also thanked various vendors for the project, including Gariup Construction, the company overseeing the project; Hunger Skateparks, the company that designed the new park; Musco Sports Lighting; Midwestern Electric; and DVG Team, Inc.

Parks Director Jennie Burgess said the new, concrete park will feature a 14,500-square-foot skateable area, three street-style lanes, coping, a 5,000 square-foot flow bowl, a peanut pool and more.

“With Hunger Skateparks, we held different community meetings and worked with youth and adults alike on what they’d like to see,” Burgess said.

The City’s current wooden skate park is located on the north side of the Crown Point Sportsplex. The park was built in two phases in 1999 and 2000 and has undergone improvement projects in recent years.

The Board of Public Works and Safety awarded the new project to Gariup Construction at its Sept. 18 meeting. The bid totaled $1.78 million.

The new park is slated to open in 2025.
