Community Healthcare System’s Hope Robinson fulfills childhood dream of caring for mothers and babies

During National Nurses Week in May, Community Healthcare System recognizes hardworking nurses who are devoted to their patients. This year, Prenatal Navigation Coordinator Hope Robinson at Community Hospital in Munster was honored as Community Hospital’s Patient Experience winner for her commitment to providing high-level patient care.

Robinson knew she wanted to be a nurse ever since she was a child. That childhood dream came true when she graduated from nursing school at 20 years old.

“I remember being 5, putting on a nurse hat, and telling my mom that I was going to be a nurse who takes care of babies. I never deviated from that plan,” Robinson said.

Spending much of her career working in neonatal nursing, neonatal ICU, and as a neonatal nurse educator, Robinson has fulfilled her dream of caring for babies. Robinson, who has earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing, is currently working toward her doctorate degree.

Connecting with mothers before, during and after they give birth to their babies is what Robinson cherishes most about her job. She recommends young mothers seek prenatal care early so they can build strong relationships with their healthcare providers.

“We are here to promote optimal health for you and your baby, and we want you to feel safe to share what's going on with you so we can keep you and your baby in the very best health,” Robinson said.

Robinson recently connected with a woman who was about eight weeks into her pregnancy and struggled with a longtime heroin addiction. The woman came to Community Hospital because she wanted help overcoming her addiction before the baby was born so she could protect the baby’s health and build a nurturing lifestyle in which to raise her children.

With Community Hospital’s help, the woman is involved in counseling and treatment programs, both of which are helping her make the changes she needs. She now has been able to reconnect with her mother after a long estrangement, obtain her own apartment and care for her 6-year-old daughter.

“The woman is now 25 weeks pregnant, and she and the baby are doing well. She told me, ‘I have my life back.’ There is nothing more thrilling than seeing that,” Robinson said.

Connections and stories like these are what have inspired Robinson to serve patients at Community Hospital for the past 15 years. She is grateful to be part of Community Healthcare System and looks forward to the next decade of caring for patients.

“I’ve worked in multiple hospitals in multiple states, and Community Healthcare System has been nothing but a positive, enriching and supportive environment. I’ve enjoyed every minute,” Robinson said. “My colleagues, supervisors and directors have always encouraged me to grow, to thrive and to be the best I can be.”

Outside of her work at Community Hospital, Robinson enjoys being active in her community. She takes walks with her family, plays piano at her church and frequents the theater. She also loves spending time with her husband, three adult children and two grandchildren.
