City of Whiting’s 2016 “Paint the Town Pink” Initiative Raises $15,460.21 for Methodist Foundation, Breast Health/Cancer Initiatives

In May 2016, the City of Whiting hosted its annual Paint the Town Pink Initiative, a series of events during the month of May dedicated to raising money and awareness for Breast Health/Cancer Initiatives. After totaling the funds, the City of Whiting presented the Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals with a check for $15,430 in August of 2016.

"Every day we witness growing and unmet needs," explained Jennifer Sanders, Manager at the Northwest Indiana Breast Care Center at Methodist Hospitals. "Although among the top four cancers nationwide, sadly breast cancer is the number one cancer detected at Methodist Hospitals."

She continued, "While our Breast Care Center provides services at both the Northlake and Southlake campuses, we remained challenged by the need to reach deeper into the community to elevate awareness and, in doing so, play a prominent role in reducing late stage diagnosis and breast cancer mortality risks.

The fundraising Paint the Town Pink events included a "Stomp Out Cancer" 5K fun run/walk, "Smash Cancer" at the downtown Whiting Cruise Night, a "Not Your Momma's" Bunco Night, and a "Battin' for Boobies" charity softball game. It is a tradition each May for Whiting to host fun events geared toward raising funds for breast care research.
