City of Gary Touts Weeklong Schedule of Activities Leading up to Labor Day

2014-Gary-Labor-Day-Weekend-Collage“We are excited about the offerings that will take place from August 25th through the 31st,” said Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson. “Many of the events are free, and there will be activities for all ages.”

All the upcoming activities are listed below:

Fuller Center Build – Jackson Street of Dreams August 25 - 29
The Fuller Center of Gary will host a volunteer projects where a total of four homes in 2300 and 2400 blocks of Jackson St. will be built/renovated during the week of August 25-29. Volunteers are invited to come out any of these days to assist. Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and her leadership team will be on-site to volunteer all day, Wednesday, August 27.

Persons interested in becoming volunteers during the week of August 25-29 when the actual building begins are encouraged to contact FCH of Gary by email:, or by calling 219-884-5804, or they can register online at All skill levels are needed in a variety of disciplines including plumbing, electrical, painting, hanging drywall, roofing and much more. Construction will be supervised by qualified personnel, and unskilled volunteers are also welcome.

Jazzin’ on the Lagoon – August 28
The ultra popular HG Soul, Reggie Foster & RFJ Band will present a musical tribute to Stevie Wonder at Marquette Park Pavilion, 1 N. Grand Boulevard. Doors open at 6:30PM, live band at 7:30PM. MJ Tribute Festival of the Arts – August 28 - 30
The Jackson family, in partnership with the City of Gary, is hosting a three-day festival to honor the life and legacy of Michael Jackson. JSpot Comedy Club at Majestic Star Casino – August 29 - 30
The Majestic Star Casino will present the JSpot Comedy Club featuring comedienne Vanessa Fraction Friday, August 29 at 8pm and August 30 at 8pm and 10pm. Tickets are $25 pre-sale online at or $30 at the door.

Lakeshore Celebrity Golf Classic – August 30
The City of Gary is hosting an Inaugural Lakeshore Celebrity Golf Classic Saturday, Aug. 30 at South Gleason Golf Course, 3400 Jefferson St. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. and play will begin at 10:00 a.m. Already confirmed to play in the tournament is supermodel and business mogul, Beverly Johnson. Cost to participate is $100 per individual and includes continental breakfast and dinner. Register as a Lakeshore Celebrity Golf Classic foursome for $400 and receive tees and golf ball classic gift bags, four photographs of the group, continental breakfast and dinner for the group. Youth Gospel Explosion – August 30
The City of City of Gary’s Youth Services Bureau will present a Youth Gospel Explosion, Saturday, August 30 from10:00a.m. – 3:00p.m. in Gateway Park, 4th and Broadway. More than 20 local youth gospel groups are slated to perform. Admission is free. Bring your lawn chairs. For more information call (219) 881-5270.

Lakeshore Music Festival – August 31
The inaugural Lakeshore Music Festival is an exciting one-day signature event Sunday, August 31st from 10am – 8pm at Gary's beautiful Marquette Park! The event is free to attend and will feature local and national musical performances of Gospel, Jazz, R&B and House. The featured performer is Lalah Hathaway, who will take the stage at 4:00p.m. Her performance will be followed by a House Party with famed DJ Alan King of The Chosen Few. There will be a beer garden, food and shopping vendors and much more. Attendees are asked to bring lawn chairs and plan to spend the entire day in the park.

El Debarge in Concert – August 31
Majestic Star Casino will present famed artist El Debarge in concert Sunday, August 31 at 8p.m. at the the Majestic Star Events Center. Tickets are $25 and are available at
