City of Gary Officials Make Plans to Lay Officer to Rest

City-of-GaryScores of officers and administrators representing various law enforcement agencies gathered today at Gary’s Public Safety Facility to plan funeral arrangements for Gary Police Officer Jeffrey Westerfield, who was shot and killed in the line of duty early Sunday morning.

Visitation will take place Sunday, July 13 from 2:00p.m. – 8:00p.m., and the funeral will take place Monday, July 14 at 11:00a.m. with doors opening at 10:00a.m. Both events will be held at the Genesis Convention Center at 5th Avenue and Broadway in downtown Gary.

The burial service will take place immediately following the funeral at Chapel Lawn Cemetery, 8178 Cline Avenue in Schererville, IN. During the procession, the caravan will pause at Gary’s Public Safety Facility at 555 Polk St. where the final 1042 call will be announced over the police radio. Local businesses and organizations are asked to fly their flags at half staff and place messages of support on their marquees.

“We are so grateful for the outpour of support from neighboring police departments and agencies across the state who have come together to ensure a first-class tribute to the life and service of Officer Westerfield,” said Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.

The investigation of Westerfield’s death is being spearheaded by the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, and no charges have been filed at this time.
