Cirque du Jazz: A Nutcracker Tale to Offer an Interesting Twist on the Holiday Classic

2014-Cirque-du-Jazz-CollageCirque du Jazz: A Nutcracker Tale, with its circus staging, performance surprises, and musical mix of classical Tchaikovsky and Duke Ellington jazz versions of the traditional Nutcracker score, promises to deliver an avant garde twist on the holiday classic.

Cirque du Jazz will take place at the Griffith High School Auditorium, 600 N. Wiggs St.. in Griffith, on Friday, December 19, and Saturday, December 20, at 7 p.m., and on Sunday, December 21, at 3 p.m. The performances are presented by South Shore Dance Alliance (SSDA) and the Wirt-Emerson Dance Department.

“We presented this variation on the traditional Nutcracker staging for the first time last year, and it was a hit,” says SSDA artistic director Larry Brewer. “Cirque du Jazz takes the wonderful score and elements of the traditional Nutcracker production and combines it with Duke Ellington’s jazz version of the music and a unique circus theme, so there’s something for everybody in this production. It’s very quirky and whimsical, but as always, the dancing is in the ‘center ring’, and the show is a lot of fun for kids and adults.”
