Chesterton High School Counselors “On the Go”

Student-meet-with-repsThe Chesterton High School Guidance Department celebrated CollegeGo!Week during the last full week of September and activities will continue throughout the fall. CollegeGo!Week is an annual campaign in the state of Indiana to help Hoosier students plan for education beyond high school. During CollegeGo!Week and throughout the fall months, the Guidance Department/Career Center open their doors to many colleges and universities. Admission representatives hold meetings with students or set up tables in the cafeteria so students can easily access their information.

The list of visitors included The University of Chicago, University of Alabama, University of Indianapolis, Indiana University Northwest, Purdue University North Central, Indiana State University, Ivy Tech Community College, Roosevelt University, Bradley University, Kettering University, Lawrence University, Alma College, Trinity International University, Sweet Briar College, Indiana Wesleyan University, Manchester University, Franklin College, Wabash College, University of St. Francis, DePauw University, Marian University, Grace College, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps, and the Indiana National Guard.

Students were also encouraged to attend the North Central Regional College Fair held at Purdue University North Central or the Central Midwest College Fair held at Purdue University North Central.

CHS counselors also got involved. The counselors met with Admissions representatives from Indiana University and the University of Chicago to be updated on changes in financial aid and updated admissions processing. They also attended or will attend programs at Purdue University Calumet, Purdue University North Central, and a Manufacturing Tour of local industry that included stops at PalaTek in Michigan City and Arcelor Mittal in Burns Harbor. Part of the manufacturing tour was a presentation on the Steelworker for the Future Program – a partnership between Arcelor Mittal and Ivy Tech Community College. A future trip is planned to tour Urschel Laboratories.

In addition, CHS Guidance Chairperson Karen Moffett attended the National Association of College Admissions Counselors National Convention in Indianapolis where she had the opportunity to meet college representatives from across the nation at the Indianapolis National College Fair as well as attend many sessions designed to assist our CHS students with their future plans.
