Challenger Learning Center to Offer Children’s Summer Camps in 2016

Registration for children’s summer camps offered by the Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana on the campus of Purdue University Calumet in Hammond has begun.

The children’s summer camps will consist of various educational and entertaining activities targeted at students from ages 5-15. All of the camps will be led by Challenger Learning Center educators.

Sue Petersen, Co-Lead Flight Director, spoke on the success of last year’s summer camps.

“Last year at Robotics Camp, they made brush robots. Battle of the brushes we called it,” Petersen said. “Rocketry is always popular. They build and take home a model rocket.”

Among the children’s summer camp offerings is the Star Wars themed Rebel Training Camp, with sessions for children aged 7-9 and 10-12, which will investigate explosions, lasers, holograms and intergalactic space travel. The camp will also include a mini-lightsaber for campers to take home.

Underwater Astronaut Training for children aged 11-15 is another notable summer camp being offered by the Challenger Learning Center. Campers will be educated on how astronauts become spacewalk ready by training in the Neutral Buoyancy Lab and receive basic scuba training from certified instructors. Campers will then test out their skills in underwater training exercises.

“Underwater Astronaut Training is pretty much the highlight of our summer. It’s a day in the lab and a day in the water,” Petersen said.

Many more educational and entertaining summer camps will be offered by the Challenger Learning Center, including camps targeted at kindergarten and first-grade students.

“Astro-Tots Camp is for toddlers and it’s very popular,” Petersen said. “You’re never too young for science.”
