The Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana opened its doors in 1999 and since that time more than 225,000 students have taken simulated missions to the Moon, Mars and beyond at the center.
As part of its 15th anniversary celebration, Challenger Learning Center of Northwest Indiana hosted a patch and logo design contest inviting students to create an image that represented the center’s goals of inspiring and engaging students to pursue careers in the critical fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) – and to reach for the stars.
The winning design, selected by center staff members, was submitted by Jane Bachus from Western Avenue School in Flossmoor, Illinois. Bachus, now a 5th grade student at Western Avenue, had only heard stories about the center from her sister, but recently flew her own mission and was thrilled with the experience.
“I loved that the mission control and the spacecraft were separate, so it seemed so real…one of the best places a kid can go to learn about space,” said Bachus.
“Jane’s design symbolizes the center’s mission in a bright, fun way,” said Becca Manis, director of the center. “We’re so excited to be celebrating 15 years of inspiring students to think about not only their future, but ours.”
