After a week on display and with over 700 votes cast, the winners of the 2014 Canstruction Northwest Indiana competition have been selected. Winners were chosen in 4 categories; the People’s Choice Award, Most Creative, Best Meal, and Structural Ingenuity. The People’s Choice Award was based on votes cast by the general public during the week of July 28th. The remaining awards were voted on by a panel of judges from across Lake and Porter Counties.
The winning teams and designs are:
People’s Choice Winner - Griffith YMCA “We Can Unite: Captain America Shield”
Most Creative - Campagna Academy “Batman”
Best Meal - Chesterton Boys & Girls Club & Chesterton YMCA “United Way Logo”
Structural Ingenuity - Boys and Girls Club of Northwest Indiana: Cedar Lake Club “Wonder Woman”
“All of our teams did an incredible job, and should be extremely proud of themselves,” said Lou Martinez, President/CEO of the Lake Area United Way. “Through the efforts of everyone involved in Canstruction Northwest Indiana, 45,000 meals were donated to the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, and ultimately to local food pantries.”
The teams were composed of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from Northwest Indiana. Each team was matched with a volunteer coach. “We were amazed at the ingenuity and creativity of our teams. But most importantly, we were so proud of their teamwork and spirit of cooperation,” said Sharon Kish, President of United Way of Porter County.
“The spirit of cooperation involved with Canstruction Northwest Indiana to move our region forward is commendable. Congratulations to Lake Area United Way and United Way of Porter County for executing such a successful endeavor,” Congressman Pete Visclosky said.
Canstruction Northwest Indiana was powered by the Lake Area United Way and United Way of Porter County in partnership with Congressman Pete Visclosky and Southlake Mall. Purdue University Calumet and Purdue University North Central were Title Sponsors.
