Calumet College of St. Joseph Partners With the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana

ccsj-food-bank-1Calumet College of St. Joseph and the Northwest Indiana Food Bank have announced a partnership to open the first school food pantry. Jessica Compton, CCSJ student and president of G.I.V.E. (Get Involved, Value Everyone), said that the College had established their own food pantry a few years ago. It was funded strictly by donations from the College family. The need outreached their ability to serve those students in need and G.I.V.E. stepped in to find an answer.

The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana’s Executive Director, Ms. Arlene Peterson, reminded everyone of the statistics of hunger in this area. The need is ever growing and the Food Bank seeks new ways to fill that need. She is excited to partner with the College in this new endeavor.

ccsj-food-bank-2Dr. Daniel Lowery, president of the College, expressed the fact that hunger on college campuses is a nationwide problem. He is proud of the fact that G.I.V.E. not only saw the problem, but found a solution because, he said, “Family takes care of family.” He thanked all of those involved in this new project which will make a world of difference to so many students.

He also thanked Tri Kappa of Munster-Highland who donated a freezer for the updated facility and everyone who has taken such an interest in this project.
