“Bringing Nature Home” native planting awards program applications due July 20

Shirley Heinze Land Trust announces the tenth season of its annual “Bringing Nature Home” Awards program. The initiative recognizes those in northwestern Indiana who landscape their grounds or gardens using plant species that are native to the region. Home gardeners, businesses, institutions, public agencies, and landscapers are eligible to apply.

The program takes its name from a book written by native-plant advocate Douglas Tallamy.  “Tallamy’s research has shown that native species of wildflowers, shrubs, and trees provide the best source of shelter and sustenance for birds, bees, butterflies, and other wildlife,” says Programs Coordinator Sarah Barnes. “Home gardeners and landscapers can play a vital role in supporting the survival of these species by using native plants.”

Plantings in Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and St. Joseph Counties are eligible. Applications are due no later than Monday, July 20, 2020. Full program details, photos of last year’s awardees, and an online application may be found at https://heinzetrust.org/bringingnaturehome/.
