While most high school students were fast asleep at 6 a.m. on Monday - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - the Bishop Noll band was preparing to perform at the Hammond Civic Center.
On this snowy day, a special celebration took place in honor of Dr. King and students from Bishop Noll, a private Catholic high school in Hammond, performed throughout.
This day holds special significance for the band that traveled last year to Memphis where they performed at the Liberty Bowl. During the tour the band visited the National Civil Rights Museum, which is attached to the Lorraine Motel where Dr. King was slain. “I was so proud of our students. They saw firsthand what this day means to our nation by seeing the struggles, tragedies and triumphs at the museum. They took the event and the day to heart and it was heartwarming. They represented the school, the band, themselves and our community with class, reverence and professionalism," said BNI band director Mr. Rocco Carioto.
Bishop Noll offers a variety of fine arts classes including band and choir and is currently enrolling students for 2019. For more information, please visit bishopnoll.org or email admissions@bishopnoll.org.
