The annual City of Lake Station Back to School Community Action Day has brought many smiles to parents and kids of all ages. 40 vendors from all over Indiana donated many supplies. Some supplies include backpacks, pencil cases, t-shirts, and many more.
Not only were there school supplies there were also haircuts for anyone who needed a back-to-school trim.
Mayor Carroll of Lake Station has organized this family fun event with the help of the Superintendent of Lake Station Community Schools, Dr. Tom Cripliver, and many other organizations.
“We just want to make sure that every kid has school supplies and anything else they need to be ready to go to school. Everybody has different financial situations, and we want to make sure to accommodate everyone. We want everybody to be equal,” said Mayor Carroll.
Many organizations and companies put stuff together for this event. The Chicago White Sox was out giving away t-shirts, flags, and backpacks. The fire department was there to teach kids about the safety of others.
The police force and K-9, were there to show kids how to be safe when walking to school.
This event has gotten everyone pumped for back to school. Mayor Carroll and Dr. Cripliver have done everything they can to make sure that the city stays connected with the school and most importantly the families who live in the city of Lake Station.
“I'm just glad that between the city and the school we have such a good relationship. We are able to work together on everything. That's always a positive when the school and the city government can come together. We help each other because it's all about our community and our children. Our main goal is to make sure that we're taking care of our community and our children,” said Mayor Carroll.
There are plenty of other things the City of Lake Station like to do for families including having a monthly free pool day for anyone in the community.
“We've been doing a free pool day every one day a month for our community. I figured that if I got a pool and it's hot outside, why not let our citizens go in and use it for free for a day. I really like to do little stuff like that. It goes a long way and it gets the kids outside and off the couch,” said Mayor Carroll.
Mayor Carroll wants to make the City of Lake station as positive and fun as possible. Giving back is what Lake Station is all about.
“We're about giving back to our citizens and making sure that whatever little resources we have, we're able to do something with them matters. My whole thing is positivity and helping people make dreams like this event come true. It’s very humbling to be able to put this on. And at the same time just seeing the kids smile at the parents here and the amount of people who come out, it's really awesome,” said Mayor Carroll.
