With the end of summer quickly approaching and a return to school at hand for kids across the Region, Belvedre Senior Housing decided to throw one last summer bash with their residents. The Family Carnival, hosted on Saturday, featured games, prizes, face painting, and more.

As a community, Belvedere hosts two big events every month. From holiday festivities such as their Easter Egg-Stravaganza to their recent Belvedere Beach party, the staff and resident volunteers are always putting together new experiences for the community and their families.

“This is one big party before all the little ones go back to school,” said Jennifer Kasch, Director of Marketing at Belvedere. “We want to let people know exactly who we are and what we’re about.  People have a lot of preconceived notions of what senior living is, but once they see how it’s an independent lifestyle – their eyes are opened. When you walk through our doors, you feel at home.”

Carnival attendees enjoyed summer classics like hot dogs, snow cones, and cotton candy as they toured the array of games and activities. Duck pond, ring toss, and a massive bounce house all kept the kids excited as generations of parents looked on. The most ambitious and popular activity was the dunk tank built by staff and resident volunteers. Constructed of PVC pipes, hoses, and a lot of clever engineering, the homemade dunk tank drenched anyone brave enough to get under a bucketful of water.

“The fact that our residents are involved in every step, setup, and decoration thrills them to the point that I can listen to them talk to their family members about how proud they are,” said Georgianna Bala, Resident Services Coordinator for Belvedere. “They truly own this, and it’s a part of their everyday life. It’s the best feeling… it gives me goose bumps talking about it. They’re a part of the planning, they come up with the ideas. It’s been such a great experience working with these residents.”

Marsha Haussman, who will celebrate her second anniversary at Belvedere in September, helps out at every event she can. This time, she kept watch at the bounce house and handed out prizes to every kid who took a turn in that colorful castle.

“Events like this are very important,” Haussman said. “We have a lot of people coming in from the outside at these, and I wish we could get even more people to attend.  If there’s a party, I come to it!”
