We at Ideas in Motion Media are proud to announce that we will be sponsoring the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s event. This disease fatal and it takes a toll on not only the person who has it, but those around him or her.
"We are proud to partner with such a great organization raising funds and awareness for an important cause that is impacting so many families throughout Northwest Indiana," Chris Mahlmann, Publisher and CEO of Ideas in Motion Media, said. "Participating in the walk and their ongoing communication of their fundraisers, educational programs, and community outreach is closely tied to our mission in Life."
I was especially happy to take part in this as my great grandma suffered from Alzheimer’s. She was a sweet, wee woman with a soft heart and a kind word for anyone who happened to be blessed enough to know her. I will walk for my grandma.
Many of you might be reading this and nodding to yourself as you relate to my words and remember someone you know and love who was or is affected by Alzheimer’s. You want to help them, but what will walking do?
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the nation’s largest event that raises awareness and funds to support care and research for Alzheimer’s.
At a recent kickoff meeting at Jelly Pancake House in Merrillville, IN. Louise Thompson, a Community Outreach Specialist for the Alzheimer’s Association, lead a group in preparation for the Merrillville Walk that will take place on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at Hidden Lake Park.
“The Merrillville Walk has been going on for over 12 years,” Thompson said. “Jelly Pancake House is very good at supporting the community and one of our committee members suggested coming here and they are wonderful to work with. Many of the people who are here tonight have a loved one who had or has Alzheimer’s. You don’t get over Alzheimer’s. It is a fatal disease and many people don’t know that. And we are trying to raise funds and raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.”
At the meeting Thompson talked about the Walk and why it was important to the community, she also had information available about resources and services that were available from the Alzheimer’s Association. There were a few guests speakers that told the crowd why they were involved and why this cause is some important to them. On of the speakers was April Wolford.
“My mom has Alzheimer’s and that’s what brought me to the support groups. I didn’t know where to go or where to take her,“ Wolford said. “It’s so important to spread awareness and so important to get involved because the numbers are growing. I walk so that perhaps one day someone else won’t have to go through what my mom is going through.”
“We were approached to help with the kickoff meeting,” Kelly Daniels, General Manager of Jelly Pancake House said. “When I approached my boss about this he said, ‘Go ahead and do whatever you need to do with this.’ He knew my dad had Alzheimer’s so this hits home for me.”
