Athletes descend on Region this week

Amateur and professional athletes will descend on the region to take part in baseball, golf and bowling events. Amateur sporting events is a $9 billion industry nationwide. The South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority hosts dozens of tournaments and championships throughout the year. Beginning July 12 through July 18 more than 500 athletes will arrive with their families, coaches and fans to compete in the South Shore.

In addition to golfers, amateur baseball players will compete in the Game Day Series Grand at the Crown Point Sportsplex. Sixty teams of 9-13 year olds will arrive on July 12 and continue to compete through July 14. Games begin on July 12 at noon and with the last game at 8:00 p.m. July 13 games will begin at 8:00 a.m. with the last game at 8:00 p.m. and on July 14, games begin at 8:00 a.m. with the last game played at 6:00 p.m.

On July 14 and 15 the Junior Masters Golf will take place at Briar Ridge Country Club in Schererville. Nearly 100 Hoosier golfers will compete in this Master Challenge. Tee times begin at noon on July 14 and 10:00 a.m. on July 15.

Professional athletes will also join the mix in the South Shore with Professional senior bowlers for the Senior PBA 50 taking place at Olympia Lanes in Hammond on July 15-18. Approximately 100 bowlers from across the country will come to the South Shore to compete in this PBA event.
