Andrean High School to induct nine into sports hall of fame

Merrillville, Ind. - Andrean High School will induct eight individuals and the 2012 state champion softball team into the 2020 Sports Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place in the Andrean cafeteria on Sunday Feb. 16 starting at 4 p.m.

The ceremony will include video highlights of many of the honorees and is open to the public. Tickets for the event are $45 each. All are welcome to attend as we induct this special group of athletes and coaches.

The 2020 Hall of Fame class is led by Oakland Athletics’ star pitcher Sean Manaea (2010), who threw a no-hitter in 2018. Manaea will not be in attendance due to the start of spring training.

Rounding out the star-studded class is Sara Buttersworth Tomasevich (2000), who was a two-sport athlete excelling in soccer and softball. Joe Mack (2006) played infield and helped lead the 2004-2005 varsity baseball team to a 33-2 record. Kenny Mahala and Audrey Bickel will also represent the Class of 2010 as well. Mahala was a decorated high school player at Andrean, leading his team to back-to-back state titles in 2009 and 2010. Bickel hit the state championship game-winning home run in 2007.

In eight years at Andrean, Bob Buscher's record was 134-50. He led the 59ers to five sectional titles. Phil Mason led Andrean to the 2013 Class 3A state football championship.

George Walton will be awarded for his distinguished service.

Finally, the 2012 softball varsity team will enter the Hall of Fame together. The varsity team brought home its third overall state title for the 59ers (1998 and 2007).
