A Saturday staple: Chesterton’s European Market brings community to Life

Shortly after opening, the scent of fresh-baked pierogi mingled with the strum of a local one-man band, and dogs in bandanas trotted past booths bursting with handmade art and garden-fresh produce. For more than two decades, a cherished Chesterton tradition has come to life every Saturday morning in the heart of downtown: the European Market. Open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the season, this lively marketplace unfolds at the intersection of Broadway and Third Street, right next to Thomas Centennial Park. More than just a place to shop, the market serves as a vibrant hub for the community—a space to gather, connect, and support local makers.

Visitors can explore a diverse selection of goods from regional vendors, including fresh produce, blooming flowers, artisan foods, handcrafted art, and other high-quality offerings.

“It brings a sense of togetherness as well as allowing us to buy locally rather than having to go to a grocery store, and question less about what you're getting,” said Rachel Sandberg.

Sandberg and her husband, Brad Sandberg, six-year residents of Chesterton, have been coming to the market for the past four years.

Organized by the Duneland Chamber of Commerce, Chesterton’s European Market has become a cornerstone of the town’s seasonal rhythm. Though its origins trace back 23 years, its spirit remains rooted in fostering community and supporting local commerce. With each season, the market continues to evolve, drawing visitors from the region and beyond while maintaining its commitment to quality and local culture.

“We want to make sure people understand what a unique and special place this is. We continue to grow, bringing in artisans and services that complement each other, and helping people discover the history and character of Chesterton,” said Cathi Rogers, European Market director for the Duneland Chamber of Commerce.

One of the market’s defining features is its curated collection of vendors who bring a wide range of goods to the table. From handmade soaps to locally made food, handcrafted jewelry to dog treats, each booth offers a distinct and personal touch. Vendors travel from across Indiana and neighboring states, to form a diverse and dynamic lineup each Saturday. With its highly dog-supportive culture, the community brings the whole family together at the market.

“I like how they have grown, and put a lot of effort into promotion, marketing and advertising. You don't see that with a lot of markets. The administration seems like they are invested into making this a premier market. They respond to our requests and advice on how to make the market better, so I think it's been a great partnership,” said Sergei Ely, owner of Ely’s Pierogi.

Among the market's long-standing vendors is Ken Flagel of Flagel Sugar House, a family-run maple syrup business that has been a Saturday staple for 15 years. Originally master plumbers from Michigan, Ken and his brother transitioned to syrup production, bringing their artisan goods from Benton Harbor to this vibrant market. Despite being "outsiders," Flagel has found a warm welcome from the community, appreciating how the market embraces vendors and creates a sense of belonging.

"I've always been really welcomed by the residents of this area. When I first started, I thought, well, as an outsider, maybe I wouldn't be welcome, but I've been very welcome,” Flagel said.

Beyond the booths, the European Market thrives on its atmosphere. Live music from local performers adds a soundtrack to the morning bustle, while the park setting invites visitors to linger, enjoy, and connect. The market draws a mix of long-term residents and out-of-town guests, many of whom incorporate visits into their weekend traditions.

As the new season begins, so does the opportunity to experience what makes Chesterton’s European Market special. The opening day fell on Saturday, May 3, but it’s never too late to help bring the space to life.

With its easy access located in the heart of Chesterton’s downtown, the market is positioned to welcome new visitors while continuing to serve its regulars.

Chesterton’s European Market is more than a weekly event—it’s a celebration of local talent, connection, and tradition. Whether you’re a long-time supporter or planning your first visit, the market welcomes you to explore, enjoy, and support the region’s best every Saturday through October.Learn more about the town of Chesterton here: chestertonin.org.
