A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: Mark Lambert

Mark Lambert is a man with a strong passion for cultivating today’s youth. He teaches history, current events, and psychology at Whiting High School, and his mission as an instructor is to teach his students about the world and how changes in our society affect us as human beings. He is an exemplary role model for young people and has a genuine interest in their development and well-being.

An instructor since 2011, Lambert always knew he wanted to be a teacher growing up. He grew up in the Region and stated that it is a blessing to be working with students in the area. He acquired both his undergraduate degree and his master’s degree in education at Indiana University Northwest.

“I try to be personable with students and strive to make the content I teach relevant in their lives,” Lambert said. “Teaching them these subjects can sometimes be difficult, but there are things in history that are often relevant in today’s world. There is a strong sense of continuity in current events and teaching young people this is important for their futures.”

Lambert stated that being an instructor has taught him as much as he has taught his students. It is a learning experience for everyone, and he believes that the classroom environment can teach you just as much about yourself. Fittingly, his favorite topic to teach is the American Civil War and the subsequent reconstruction, as it is incredibly relevant in today’s socio-economic world in terms of race relations and communication.

“Teaching has made me a much more well-rounded individual, especially when it comes to knowledge,” Lambert said. “Being a teacher for 10 years has significantly humbled me and taught me to be an active learner in daily life. Students really appreciate when teachers have a genuine interest in cultivating their livelihoods and futures.”

Lambert said that his family pushes him to do the best he can on a daily basis. He describes them as a driving light even in the worst of times, and they motivate him to move forward. He is married with a baby on the way, so he plans on providing his child the same feeling.

“I feel humbled and grateful for the opportunities in my life,” Lambert said. “Everyone I have met has inspired me in one way or another. Moving forward, I want to impart everything I have learned in my life to my students and my child.”
