A Northwest Indiana Life in the Spotlight: Dr. Shawn Naranjo

Dr. Shawn Naranjo credits his mother and other influential women in his life for his decision to become an obstetrician and gynecologist.

“My father died when I was young, and I’m very close with my mom,” Naranjo said. “I've had a lot of important women in my life. I enjoy taking care of that patient population.”

Naranjo, a Community Care Network physician on staff at Community Hospital in Munster and St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago, has been serving patients with Community Healthcare System since 2018.

In that time, Naranjo has worked tirelessly to provide the care and dedication his patients deserve.

Beyond the technical aspects, Naranjo appreciates the value obstetrics and gynecology bring to the greater community. For him, supporting women is a key reward.

“I am fascinated by the physiology of pregnancy, labor and delivery,” Naranjo said. “Working with women during such an important time in their lives is beyond rewarding.”

Although Naranjo has lived in various parts of the United States and attended the American University of the Caribbean, Naranjo has close ties to Northwest Indiana.

“Both of my parents are from the Region,” Naranjo said. “My mom is from Hammond, and my dad was born in Gary and raised in Highland. My dad's side of the family always lived here. I really enjoy the close proximity to Chicago and the variety of patients I get to work with.”

When he is not serving his patients at Community Healthcare System, Naranjo spends time enjoying what he loves most.

“My 11-month-old puppy occupies most of my time,” Naranjo said. “We go on walks, we work on training, or we go to the beach. My mom helps me take care of him when I'm on call. When I'm not at work, I also really enjoy spending time with family and friends.”

Naranjo said working within Community Healthcare System is a key factor in his successful practice at Community Care Center for Women in Dyer.

“The support from my colleagues and the administration is tremendous,” Naranjo said. “I am proud to work within the vast network of primary care physicians and subspecialists who make Northwest Indiana a place where patients receive exceptional care so close to home.”
