Jana Voskuil, Family Nurse Practitioner at the Midwest Express Clinics Munster location, decided long ago how she would leave her mark on the world.
Growing up, Voskuil always valued being able to help and make a difference in her surroundings. Her mother is a pediatric physical therapist and used to treat patients within Voskuil’s childhood home. Seeing the difference and impact her mother was able to make, Voskuil was inspired to travel to Bolivia as a Peace Corps member where she lived for 2 1/2 years.
“I worked with a nurse at the schools there doing many different tasks such as making lunches, building up greenhouses, and working to provide more nutrients in the kids’ diets,” Voskuil said. “My experience really brought to light just how much we take for granted here in the States. Everything is so convenient and accessible.”
Although she was making an impact, Voskuil couldn’t help but think bigger.
“I wanted to be able to make a larger impact and help as many people as I could. That’s when I knew I wanted to become a nurse,” she said.
From there, Voskuil traveled back to her home state of Colorado in pursuit of her nursing degree (BSN). She made her way out to Indiana where she received her master’s degree and certification as a nurse practitioner and put down roots in Munster after meeting her husband.
Voskuil works in Munster, the location with the highest client flow. After almost three years, Voskuil has worked with an array of patients from infants to the elderly. In fact, Voskuil’s oldest patient was 102 years old.
“The main aspect that I love about working at the Munster clinic is the variety of tasks I’m doing throughout my day, as well as interacting with the many patients we care for,” Voskuil said. “There are so many people from all kinds of different backgrounds, and it’s really rewarding to be able to care for them.”
Voskuil makes it a top priority to interact with her patients on a human level.
“I really listen to what my patients have to say and focus on what they really want to get out of their visit. I know this may seem like a given, but it really helps to keep patients calm when they are given your full attention and don’t feel rushed,” Voskuil said. “Most people come to see me because they are hurt or sick, so I think it’s very important to make them feel at ease and help them through their visit as best I can.”
On average, a visit to any of the Midwest Express Clinics take about an hour or less. For some, this type of fast-paced environment can be hectic and stressful, but Voskuil thinks it is the perfect fit for her.
“The fast-paced environment is something I really love about the Clinic. It also really brings us all together as a staff in order to work together to ensure all our patients are in and out as quickly as possible. Everybody helps out where they can in order to keep the clinic flowing.”
Looking back on her time at the Munster Midwest Express Clinic, Voskuil considers herself lucky to be a part of a new twist on health care.
“I wanted to try something different, so I decided to apply to be a part of the Midwest Express Clinics and it has been such a great fit ever since,” she said. “I’ve never worked for a place quite like this. I love that the CEO decided that we were going to do healthcare differently and then took that idea and just did it. It’s a wonderful organization to work for, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”
In her free time, Voskuil enjoys exercising, reading, cooking, and spending time with her husband and two kids. She also loves to continue to learn and grow within her field. Recently, Midwest Express Clinics expanded its services to include aesthetics such as fillers, Botox, JUVÉDERM®, and more.
“I recently got my certification and I continue to go to different trainings in order to expand my knowledge,” Voskuil said. “My main goal is to continue to bring value to Midwest Express Clinics in as many ways as I can.”
