6th Grade Teacher Runs to Fight Back Against Cancer

Merrillville-Intermediate-School-Schiefer-2-aMerrillville Intermediate School joined the fight against cancer with their first ever Relay Recess event on Friday, May 20th. It was our goal to bring awareness to the fight against cancer, fundraise for the American Cancer Society, and engage our students in a community service activity. Our MIS students, staff, and MVSC family helped us raise an amazing $3,325.97 donation.

One of our 6th grade teachers, Mr. Dan Schiefer motivated the students by challenging them to sign up for the relay. Once we reached over 300 student participants Mr. Schiefer offered to run during all 6 of our relay rounds. A total of 383 students participated in the event along with teachers, staff, and a few special guests from our community. Mr. Schiefer ran a total of 24 miles and pledged a $5 donation per mile. The staff and students of MIS are thankful for his time, dedication, and passion to our event.

Merrillville-Intermediate-School-Schiefer-1“It was an honor running today to show my heart for my relatives who have been claimed by cancer as well as those who have survived” said Dan Schiefer. Schiefer also stated “charitable giving is something that our students should be exposed to and take part in in order to grow and develop into kind, caring, and compassionate individuals”.
