4th Annual Kankakee River Sandhill Crane Paddle Set for October 20, 2013

A Rare Opportunity to Explore a Historic Waterway

paddleNative Americans and early explorers, called it the hekiki, Huakiki, Aukiki, as well as the Sauwauseebe, but area residents know it simply as “The Kankakee.” On Sunday, October 20, paddlers and nature lovers of all ages are invited to join the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association on an easy float down this historic waterway.

The Kankakee River Sandhill Crane Paddle has become an annual tradition attracting hundreds of participants since starting in 2010. Last year, around 120 paddlers enjoyed a picture perfect day on the water before moving to Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area to witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles—the gathering of ten thousand or more Sandhill Cranes at dusk.

Organized by the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, this family-friendly event is a presented in partnership with LaPorte County Parks, Porter County Parks, Kankakee River Basin Commission, the Porter County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, Friends of the Kankakee, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, the LaPorte County Commissioners and Drainage Board, LaCrosse School Corporation, Christopher B. Burke Engineering, Coulter Produce, and the producers of Everglades of the North.

Paddlers should plan to arrive at the Yellow River Public Access Site at English Lake, Indiana no later than 10:00 a.m. After signing in and dropping off their boats and gear, drivers will move their cars to the “take out” at Porter County Park’s Dunn’s Bridge historic site. Once there, a shuttle bus will transport paddlers back to the English Lake for the start. The last bus is scheduled to leave the Dunn’s Bridge parking lot at 12:30 am (central time).

Those without a boat may rent a canoe or kayak from event partner, Chicago River Canoe and Kayak. Prices range from $35 for a “single” to $50 for tandem. Rentals must be reserved in advance at (312)823-3384 or ryanwc@sbcglobal.net.

A $5 suggested donation is requested to support the Northwest Indiana Paddling Association's education and blueways stewardship efforts in the region. Paddlers wishing to participate should register online at www.nwipa.org.
