What's Going On:
The tests have been taken and the last homework assignments and projects given out. May has arrived and students and staff alike are eager to find the final days of school.
Prom was held this month on May 5 at the Halls of St. George. This years theme was “Party of the Year”. This year's prom Queen and King were Courtney Rhomburg (12) and Jack Quinlan (12).
AP testing followed Prom, testing lasted from May 7-18 and Lake Central tested over 1000 students in a span of two weeks. May 16 is Senior Honors night being held at Lake Central where the top performing students of the class of 2018 were honored for their major achievements.
The yearbook was distributed to students on May 18 at lunch. Students were able to grab their yearbooks and have their friends sign them. If you are interested in purchasing a yearbook please contact Sarah Verpooten @sverpoot@lcscmail.com.
Finally Lake Central held a vote for general fund referendum on election day (May 8) with a final count of 53 to 47 percent voting in favor of a referendum. The new tax is set to go into effect for the 2019/2020 school year.
Though the start of May was exciting, all eyes are focused on the end of the month and more specifically May 25, the last day of school for students. Final exams are set to take place that last week of school and will last from May 22-25.
Finally on June 3 the class of 2018 will meet for the day seniors have been dreaming of since August 14. We wish the class of 2018 the best as they embark on a new adventure in their lives. We thank you for all the laughs and smiles you have brought us these past four years and we hope we have put you on the "Pathways to Excellence."
Congratulations to the “Tribe of Pride” the graduating class of 2018! We are L.C.

Teacher Spotlight
Mrs. Louise Tallent (Family and Consumer Science ‘CTE’) is one of the family and consumer science teachers at Lake Central. She is going on her twentieth year of teaching at Lake Central and has been involved in education since the age of 14. Tallent was picked as teacher of the year along with Tina DuBrock (Kindergarten). The teacher of the year is picked by a committee of former winners.
“I was totally surprised, I had no idea and I am so incredibly honored and humbled. There are so many wonderful teachers in our corporation and I just figured that it's a wonderful honor, but there are so many wonderful teachers in our district so I never thought I would be a recipient,” Tallent said.
Throughout her lifetime in education, Tallent has seen many things and says the biggest thing that keeps her coming back is the students and staff.
“These kids they are awesome, and the staff, Lake Central has a tremendous staff. They are professional and knowledgeable and have a real heart for making sure kids are ready for life after high school,” Tallent said.
The most rewarding thing she finds in her job is seeing her students get excited when they finish their projects in class and realize it’s actually good.
“There is so much potential in so many of these students, it is mind boggling to me,” Tallent said.
Tallent has found that her inspiration and role model in life is Ellen Swallow Richards who was the first graduate and womans instructor at MIT. Richards, who created the modern curriculum of Family and Consumer Science that Tallent teaches at Lake Central, is someone that Tallent looks up to. Tallent has found that by teaching family and consumer science she is really helping students be put on a pathway to excellence.
“If I was going to put my time and energy and money into a career, I wanted to dedicate it to a discipline that I thought would make an impact. All disciplines do, but what would fit with all the other life experiences that I had? The family is the base of a society or culture. So if I could teach life skills that help educate, help develop young lives that would bring strength our families, our culture's base, I chose that discipline,” Tallent said.
Student Spotlight: Jasmine Reyes
Jasmine Reyes is a senior this year at Lake Central who will be on of the 700 plus students who are graduating on June 3. Reyes, who will be graduating with Academic Honors, has done a number of things to prepare herself for life after high school.
“I feel like Lake Central has really prepared me for life after high school. I took difficult classes and classes that I think will benefit me and prepare me for college,” Reyes said.
Besides being one of the top graduates for the class of 201,8 Reyes has run track and cross country for multiple years.
“I have run cross country since sixth grade. It has been difficult to balance sports and school. It has required nights and early mornings but it’s all worked out in the end,” Reyes said.
Reyes will be attending Purdue University West Lafayette and will be studying to become a pharmacist.
"I want to study pharmacy because I don’t really feel like being a doctor and going to school for multiple years. I want to get started in a career and help people who cannot help themselves,” Reyes said.
With high school coming to an end for her she is excited to leave but also sad that she won't be able to see her friends who are underclassmen and her favorite teachers that she would see on a day to day basis. Reyes cites that her family and friends along with teachers and coaches have all helped her on her pathway to excellence.
“I owe my success to many people. My family has given me great life advice and encourages me to do my best. My friends have pushed me to be my best. My teammates have been there to pick me up at my weakest along with my coaches and teachers who have helped me on my journey through high school,” Reyes said.
