"I voted, did you?"

This question echoes through Social Studies Teacher Nicholas Belyayev's AP Government classes, embodying a commitment to civic responsibility and the education taking place within his classroom. Beyond conventional teaching, Belyayev is dedicated to mobilizing young voters and orchestrating experiences with political figures that provide students with a unique and immersive understanding of the political process.

“Many students have taken it upon themselves to get registered to go out and vote during my class. In my last three years. I have probably helped to register at least 40+ students to vote,” Belyayev said.

Belyayev actively engages with Indiana's representatives, extending invitations for them to visit his classrooms. His success in these endeavors reflects his effectiveness in fostering valuable interactions between elected officials and students.

“Every year, I reach out to representatives of Indiana. In the past, Congressman Frank Mrvan has come in and spoken with students. Additionally, we have taken field trips to Whiting’s City Hall to meet Whiting's Mayor, Steve Spebar,” Belyayev said.

By cultivating a positive and encouraging atmosphere, Belyayev not only promotes academic growth but also instills a sense of confidence as students navigate the challenges of their final year.

“From the get-go, I do my best to emphasize to my students that I see them for who they are, human beings all in it together in their pursuits of graduation and ultimately doing well beyond high school,” Belyayev said.

As an Indiana University Bloomington graduate, Belyayev frequently advises students to keep their futures open, with a particular emphasis on considering enrollment in college.

“Fostering a positive mindset contributes to a student’s overall success both in the classroom and beyond because it sows the seeds for success. Ultimately, it's important to remember that life doesn't end after senior year, but it is only the beginning,” Belyayev said.

The question, "I voted, did you?" serves as a testament to the impact of education that extends beyond the classroom, inspiring students to become informed and engaged citizens.

Whiting High School bid farewell to senior Nicholas Davenport as he concluded his football career, signifying the end of a notable chapter in Davenport’s life. Known for his “do-work” mindset and driving determination, Davenport left behind a legacy that resonated within the local athletic community. As Davenport hung up his jersey, the implications of this transition were felt, which prompted reflection on the impact of his contributions and the adjustments required of the Whiting Oilers moving forward.

Davenport reflected on the incredible journey that followed from participation in football.

"It was an amazing experience that filled me with memories I will keep forever, making me a better player and a better man," Davenport said.

Approaching the end of his football career, Davenport expressed excitement about the academic transition.

"I’m excited to go off on my own like an adult, make new friends, and create new memories," Davenport said.

Looking beyond football, Davenport outlined his academic preparations for the remainder of the year. Davenport is involved in several Advanced Placement (AP) courses that are offered by Whiting High School.

"Continuing to work hard, turning in work on time, and studying will help me graduate as a top student in my class," Davenport said.

Davenport shared how he managed to balance academics and athletics during the chaos of senior year. The truth is simple; there's no big mystery to it.

"Balancing has not been a challenge; I've learned to get work done in school so that I don't have to worry about it after practice," Davenport said.

Davenport discussed his plans after high school and explained how they align with his overall high school experience.

"I plan to attend Wabash College, major in kinesiology to become an athletic trainer, and continue playing football at Wabash, aligning with my passion for sports and commitment to academic excellence," Davenport said.
