Student Spotlight: Mykel Jackson
Walking down the hallways of Hammond High School, there is this one girl in the school that everyone knows. She’s known as a cheerleader to some, a leader to others, and an academic-achieving students to many. I know her as one of my greatest friends and I don’t think anyone else deserves the spotlight at this point.

Mykel Jackson is a Hammond High senior, born August 30th, 1999. She has attended Hammond High School all four years of her high school career and has achieved much commendation from teachers, staff, and fellow students. She has a GPA of 3.78 and is ranked 13 out of 198 within the Class of 2017. She has shown leadership skills by being chosen to be apart of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar and Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. She works as a manager for the HHS girls basketball team and is even a cheerleading captain, although they haven’t formally given her the title.

Mykel exhibits the ability to be able to manage her time from being an outstanding academic student, working a job, and being involved within various extracurricular activities. On the academic side of her high school career, she has taken classes like Honors Pre-Calculus, AP Literature, and AP English. Some of the extracurricular activities that she participates in are cheerleading, softball, bible club, and Natural Helpers.

Hammond-1Student-January-2017_02 Mykel has been accepted to several college universities. Two of the colleges that she has been accepted to and has really taken an interest in are Texas Southern University and IU Bloomington. She wants to major in social work and eventually become a caseworker. After obtaining her Master’s degree in Social Work and beginning her career, she plans to open community centers. In these community centers, parents and young adults can take child development classes, financial stability classes, and receive child care during the day.

Mykel isn’t like any other high school student I know. She is striving to better herself and the people around her. She has her eyes set on the goal she wants to complete, and I don’t believe anything in her way will stop her from getting where she wants to get. You’ll always be one of my greatest friends and I pray that you go far in life and that God grants you the desires of your heart. Thank you Mykel for your wonderful charisma and captivating personality.

Hammond-1Student-January-2017_03 Sounds of the Season
On December 21, 2016, the Hammond High School choir and band held a Christmas concert. The name of the concert was titled: Sounds of the Season. The concert included five selections from the Hammond High School choir and several musical selections from the Hammond High School band.

The Hammond High choir is led by Mrs. Gibson, who recently joined the Wildcat family, working very hard with the four choir classes she has during the school day. She also worked with a few soloists who sang with the choir, including Ashley Ramirez & Sury Diaz. This event played a huge role in our school because we haven’t had a choir for two years and our school has been working hard to revamp the school’s choir.

Hammond-1Student-January-2017_04 The band is led by Ms. Suwardi, who is also a new edition to the Wildcat family. She also put in an excessive amount of work to teach the students within her classes how to play their assigned instrument and to play a specific Christmas tune.

There were also a few students who performed instrumental solos. Ariadna Diaz & Raven Glenn were two of them, both playing the piano. We also had our drumline, which was started by a group of students and supported by Ms. Suwardi, perform a closing number showcasing their musical abilities and talent.

The students all did well performing their instrumental talents, whether they did as a class, a trio, or a duet. I know that Principal Dr. Goodlow, Assistant Principal Ms. Morris, and Dean of Students Mr. White were all pleased with the concert. Mrs. Gibson and Ms. Suwardi have put excessive amounts of work into revamping the musical integration within our school and school functions. To Mrs. Gibson and Ms. Suwardi, thank you for your hard work and dedication. We know the future has many excellent opportunities to bring to you all.
