A Week to Remember
Thomas Edison Jr. Sr. High School’s homecoming week started the week of the Sunday the 3rd. The halls were full of students who were bursting with Eagle pride, eagerly participating in class dress up days and sporting their class colors. Wednesday fulfilled the annual tradition of wearing class colors, which encourages each high school class to wear a pre-determined color to showcase their class pride. The students, eager to participate, marched out of the school and ran onto the football field that had been lit up. The Anything Goes Games were on! The Anything Goes Games are a giant game that includes points put together based on smaller games, such as: Tug of War, Egg and Spoon, Over and Under, Centipede, Dizzy Bat, and so forth. The class with the most points at the end wins.
The Seniors took first, followed by Juniors, then Freshmen, and finally Sophomores. After the initial games, Friday snuck up, meaning it was pep-rally time! The Homecoming King, Joe Gedzius, was crowned. That night the football team huddled on the field and gave it their all. At half time, they crowned Laisha Padilla as Homecoming Queen. Overall, the school enjoyed a successful and spirited homecoming week.
A Teacher but More
A teacher is a person who is always changing the world, even when people don't realize just how much they are doing.
Christina Elizondo, Ms. E., is a math teacher at Thomas Edison Jr. Sr. High School. Her classes range from sixth graders to freshmen. Although Ms. E. is a fantastic teacher, she is much more to her students. Last year, Ms. E. coached or helped coach three sports: cross country, basketball, and track. She is a very self-motivated and dedicated person. Not only does she coach and teach, she is also the class of 2019’s sponsor. She puts her time in for whatever she can; she is very involved in the school.
Ms. E. is also a very open to listening and advising her students. She is the person that people go to when they need to talk or are having problems at school. Whether it’s sports or just needing to vent, she is there. She will help where help is needed, and she is one of the most enthusiastic and exciting teachers working within the school. Ms. E. rids the halls of negativity by spreading her happiness around. Her positivity is contageous and many students view her as their favorite!
A Multitasking Machine
It takes self-motivation and dedication to juggle school and multiple sports. Of the multitasking students at Thomas Edison Jr. Sr. High School, there is Ana Zepeda. She is not only a full time student, she also plays two sports and works at the Lake Station Dairy Queen. Ana believes that she should work hard now, so that she will not have to later in life or that she will at least have an easier time later in life.
Ana is a Junior at Thomas Edison Jr. Sr. High School. She is in two AP classes: AP Biology and AP History. She also plays volleyball and runs cross country. Her position in volleyball is setting, and in cross country, she is one of the top runners! Aside from those two sports, throughout her high school years she has also been involved in basketball and track. Ana feels that it is important to stay active and busy.
When Ana graduates, she wants to go to college to be an orthodontist. She wants to become an orthodontist because when Ana was younger, she had braces and they fascinated her. Ana is a very hardworking student whose dedication is sure to pay off!
Tag You're It
The Lake Station Volleyball team woke up earlier than 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning for a fundraising opportunity. They dressed in their spirit wear and met at the Walgreens on Central Avenue in Lake Station. The team split into four groups and took their spots at the corners. The street was very busy with cars zipping back and forth.
The coaches and parents stepped into the streets and walked the lines to request support for the Lake Station Volleyball team. Tagging had officially began! There were many generous donations and there were many kind people. The team sold candy bars and gave out dum dums throughout the event.
As the parents and coaches collected donations, the team cheered, sang, danced, and waved. The cheering, singing, dancing, and waving continued despite the heat as the sun rose overhead. The team had a great time together, and by the end of the three hours had raised over $700. It was amazing! Not only did tagging help raise money, it also brought the team closer together.
