#1StudentNWI: The start of Bishop Noll winter sports and recap on homecoming

What has happened?

October 7-11 was Homecoming week at Bishop Noll. This year’s theme was the 80’s. Monday was PAC-Man Day, and seniors were dressed in yellow, juniors in blue, sophomores wore pink, and the freshmen wore red. Teachers dressed in either orange or purple. On Tuesday, the theme was 80’s Character Day. Some of the best costumes were The Golden Girls and a Care Bear. On Wednesday, the theme was Wacky Tacky Day. Students were seen in mix-matched socks and shoes, Hawaiian shirts, and crazy hair. Thursday was Decades Day, and students came dressed in outfits from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s. On Friday, the theme was Extreme Warrior Wear Day. Students wore Bishop Noll attire.

At the Homecoming football game, it also happened to be senior night for the football players, cheer, and band members. A special tribute to the BNI State Champion Football team from 1989 took place to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the win. At halftime, seniors Christopher Valdes and Angelica Solis were crowned homecoming king and queen.

The BNI Student Council put on another successful homecoming week and dance.

What is coming up?

Fall sports have come to an end, which means winter sports have arrived. including basketball, wrestling, swimming, hockey, cheer, and bowling.

The BNI boys basketball team is under new administration after hiring state champion coach James Boyd. All levels of the boys basketball program are looking promising and ready for the season opener against Munster High School on November 27 at BNI.

The BNI girls basketball team is looking to clinch their 7th consecutive sectional title as well as their 3rd conference title. After only losing two seniors last year, the team is still strong and ready to show everyone what they got. The first game of the season will be against Highland High School on November 12 at BNI.

Other teams to watch closely are the bowling and wrestling teams. Last year, both teams had individual state qualifiers, and are hoping to return to state again.

Come out and support the Warriors this winter season.

Teacher Spotlight:Mr. Eloy Melero

Mr. Eloy Melero, who graduated from Noll in 2014, has returned to his alma mater as both a teacher and coach.

“My favorite thing about teaching at my alma mater is helping students with similar challenges that I faced as a student here,” Melero said. “It’s also pretty cool to see the environment hasn’t changed much since I graduated. Noll still has that family feel to it, and the students I now teach, in some ways, remind me of some of my classmates at Noll,” Melero said.

Melero is in his first official year as a teacher. He teaches Algebra 1 & 2, along with Finite Mathematics. This past school year, he was a long-term substitute teacher for sophomore theology at BNI.

In the spring, Melero will be starting his second year as one of the BNI baseball coaches. He played baseball at Noll and at the collegiate level.

“My favorite thing about being a coach is seeing a player become better on the field, but also watching him take the lesson we teach him at baseball and applying that same lesson to school and eventually life,” Melero said.

When Melero is not teaching or coaching, he likes to watch sports. His favorite leagues are the MLB and NFL. When he is not watching sports, he likes to hang out with his friends and family.

The Bishop Noll Community welcomes Melero back and is excited to see him positively impact the lives of his students.

Student Spotlight: Carmelina Komyatte

Junior Carmelina Komyatte is a well-rounded student at Bishop Noll. She is involved in National Honor Society, Spell Bowl, Speech and Debate, Academic Super Bowl, Science Olympiad, Student Council, Women Empowerment Club, and Biology Club. For sports, she part of the golf, swimming, and tennis teams. Her freshman year, she also played volleyball.

“My very favorite thing about biology club is DNA day! We decorate the school with biology memes, sell DNA-decorated cookies, and have a chromosome scavenger hunt around the school,” Komyatte said.

Komyatte, an honor student, is taking several difficult classes this year. From AP psychology to DC (dual credit) US history and DC biology, she seems to be always doing homework or studying for a test.

“My favorite class is DC biology. I love biology and I think it is such a fun and interesting subject to learn about and study. I also really like my teacher because she is so passionate about biology and learning,” Komyatte said. “Science has always been my favorite subject and an area that I have always done really well in, so the fact that this class is taught at a college level is just another reason why I like it so much. It's pretty hard, but it's totally worth it,” Komyatte said.

When Komyatte is not at practice, studying for a test, or planning school dances, she likes to relax. She likes to hang out with friends, watch Netflix, and read.

The Bishop Noll Community is grateful for all of what Komyatte does and expects her to succeed.
