#1StudentNWI: The Many May Flowers at Boone Grove

What's Happening: Softball
Softball is at Boone Grove's top five favorite sports, and is finally here for the season. For years past, the team has done exceptionally well. The team made it to state last year, unfortunately losing 1 - 0. If everything goes well, we may win state this year. All of the women on the team are incredibly efficient when it comes to any job on the field, and they all have the will to win.

"We are all one big team and we enjoy being with each other all the time. The things we have accomplished together are unbelievable. I have never been with a team more determined and passionate about a sport than these girls," said Angie Marcheschi, one of the star players on the team.

Fans are always welcome and encouraged to attend softball games. There is a home game on May 15th versus Valparaiso, and on the 17th facing Munster, both taking place at 4:30 P.M. Semi-State will be away on June 3rd, the time and place is to be announced. State Finals for the team takes place on June 10th at 12:30, the location is also to be announced.

Boone-Grove-1Student-May-2017_02 To even begin understanding how exceptional the team is, here is a fun fact. The starting nine in the hitting lineup have all had at least one home-run over the fence, which is quite rare and unheard of.

Boone Grove has great faith that the Softball team will reach great heights for the season.

Angie Marcheschi, a pitcher for the team, says, "There is really no predicting how far we will go, but I believe that with our dedication and talent, we can go as far as we want to."

Boone-Grove-1Student-May-2017_03 Teacher Spotlight: Officer Chavez
Mr. Chavez has been at Boone Grove as the SRO, or, School Resource Officer, since 2001.

"I love working at the school, I've been working here 16 years, and the students here are second to none. I couldn't ask for a better group of students."

He is more than just a police officer. He is a friend, a counselor, mentor, and a teacher.

"I consider myself a resource to the students here. I have a lot of students that come in , just wanting to talk, or they may be looking for some advice. Most importantly, I feel that my job here as the SRO is to try to establish positive relationships with the students. Often times, I think that the relationship between police and young adult is not always good. I think there is a negative perception at times, that the police are always out to 'bust you' or get you in trouble. I'm trying to break down that barrier. I'm here to help you in any way I can." Chavez added.

Since he was a child, Officer Chavez had always wanted to be a police officer. His kind soul has always craved helping people in positive ways. To contribute to his view of changing lives, he has saved multiple, including two children during the winter months.

Officer Chavez is just another human being. He has a family consisting of three children and a wife, he also enjoys playing sports such as basketball. A fun fact about Officer Chavez is that he loves listening to rap.

Boone-Grove-1Student-May-2017_04 He said "I wear this soft uniform because I feel that if I were to walk around in my class A uniform, which would be my full uniform, I believe I'm not as approachable. I want you to view me as a person, basically. Like a teacher or another staff member."

Chavez continues to work on the road, at Boone Grove, and visits other schools in the school district. Wherever he goes, he welcomes each and every person that comes to him.

"My door is always open, and I have a basket with snacks for the kids if they stop by, they can have a treat or just want to sit and talk. I don't want this office to feel like it's an interrogation room. I want it to be open and if you just want to come in and vent, or if you just want to chill out for a few minutes."

His office is located in the main hallway, and he encourages any and all to visit, or just say, "hello".

"I love working here and, I hope I'm out here for another 15 years." Chavez

Officer Chavez is an incredible man who does not receive enough credit for his amazing personality and characteristics.
