Becoming a senior is special, especially when having to prove yourself in sports, whether it's falling in the footsteps before them or improving the mark.
For the Girls soccer team and the football team, time is anticipated. Terian Garner of the HHS' football team is preparing for their season. I took the time to catch up with the player to see how the practices and chemistry of this season has built up.
For Garner expectations are set high.
“This upcoming season our football team expect to go farther than any Hammond High football team has been before. Me personally, expect my team to reach our goal and surprise everyone who doubts us. We're the underdogs in just about every game; and the team and I hate it. We're better than before and we dream to reach our own expectations,” says Garner.
Garner also feels that each team member, especially the seniors are primed and ready to win.
“Our team, as of now, is made of at least 80% focused, and hardworking seniors who are ready to win. That alone hints at how are teamwork will portray on the field. We're still learning how to win and fall as a team, but by game time we will be ready."
The bar is set high for many seniors and the girls’ soccer team is no exception.
Coach Mayra had this to say about the team. " I think we have pretty good chemistry because I have over 12 players that have been playing together for 3 years but it needs to be improved to make sure the new girls are also a part of the bond and that everyone is incorporated together, and on board with our goals.
Coach Mayra also felt that the leadership and integrity of the group is what will carry the girls to victory.
“I expect a lot of leadership and integrity from this group, so far they have not disappointed."
The seniors and incoming grades have a score to settle and heads to turn this season. On a softer note as a HHS student, Hammond is my home and the home of others. In honor of a heroine Lauren Calvillo. I would like to make an address to cease the violence, every life that is given matters. May you rest in peace Lauren, and your family and friends find peace also.
