Student Spotlight: Kaylee Smythe
Kaylee Smythe, a newbie to South Central, is enjoying the opportunities she has at the school. When asked why she ultimately decided to transfer to South Central she replied with,”I feel like there will be more opportunities for me here.”
Between academics, clubs, and sports she’s doing a fantastic job. Good grades, a role in the school play, and a little softball conditioning are just a few of the ways she is off to a great start for the school year!
Kaylee only has one thing she wishes South Central had to offer, which is an after school tutoring program.
She says, “We need something like tutoring sessions to be offered. I know I’ve needed help and it was hard to find.”
Her main goal is to maintain good grades and to snag a spot on the softball team! Inside her daily school life she attends play practices and softball conditioning, and you can tell those are a few of the things she really loves!
Outside of school she is part of another drama club, plays softball, and works out when she has the time. Many people describe Kaylee as smart, funny, ambitious, honest and above all, kind. From a bystander's point of view she works hard in class and always tries her best. In her future she will continue to work hard and triumph.
She plans on attending college to major in nursing and minor in theater arts. With big goals and big dreams she can only find success in the future!
What’s going on at SC?
These past few weeks at South Central have been very busy. The school has been active and hosted a Red Cross blood drive on September 21st, participated in fundraising to help Texas, and held a PTO tailgate party before a Friday night football game.
The American Red Cross has put a tremendous effort into helping people recovering from natural disasters since 1881. Their efforts have been recognized world wide and their hard work has paid off in many cicumstances. South Central will continue to contribute to those in need through great organizations dedicated to making a difference.
In addition to these events, on September 2nd South Central showed their respect for Hurricane Harvey victims by hosting a donation drive. Though the school is small, they showed heart in collecting items, and were able to donate in a meaningful way.
Lastly, the Friday night tailgate party will be taking place! The parents, students, athletes and observers are welcome to attend this event. The pre-game entertainment will consist of The Code Names, a band of south central students. Many students and community members are excited to see this group of students perform and show their musical talent!
Teacher Spotlight
Jessica Bules is a high school English teacher at South Central who is full of hard work and ambition. When it comes to teaching she’s figured it out all the way down to the core. She loves the students at South Central because of their kindness towards her and everyone else!
Her ideal classroom would be a room with windows and comfortable chairs, and “seated in those chairs would be students willing to learn.”
If Bules wasn’t a teacher she would be a lawyer, and says she would still attend law school if it were an option. Mrs. Bules has a personality that makes her easy to listen to and intrigues her students to learn. She is able to inspire her students to get good grades and has always been willing to lend a hand to help her students succeed.
Outside of school Bules enjoys many activities like gardening, running, watching the news, and most of all, spending time with her family. When asked about which superhero she would be if given the choice, she replied with an inspiring response. Bules said, "I would be Malala Yousafzai (who is a Pakistani activist for female education and the youngest to be honored with a Noble Prize) or Eliud Kipchoge (who is a 2016 Olympic marathon gold medalist from Kenya.
What’s coming up?
South central is one of the area’s schools who have been able to issue each of their students a Chromebook. With this technology students are given more opportunities to learn on applications outside of the classroom. With the weather in Northwest Indiana being unpredictable, students lose many days of classroom education and have to take extra days to complete the work they missed. On November 1st, south central will be experimenting with its very first elearning day. This day is being implemented to decrease the interruptions in the learning process and will take place on any make up days. If it is a success we will see more elearning days and possibly increased independent learning.
