#1StudentNWI: Shining Staff and Students at Wirt Emerson High School

"Blocking" in the new school year

This school year has begun with a BOOM giving high school students the college experience with the awesome Block Schedule System!

“I’ve been making these types of schedules for 18 years, and it was destined to be brought here to Wirt-Emerson. This schedule is built to prepare our students to be accustomed to a college-oriented learning environment.”

According to Dr. Richie, our principal. “By giving them 90-minute classes and classroom gatherings with their teachers every other day they are getting the college experience early,” he says.

The new system gives students a breeze with newly found student resource time and also time to expand their knowledge and capabilities, giving them a higher level of educational system. This transition is also giving a sense of newness to the atmosphere of the school.

“It has been a challenge maneuvering into the block scheduling system for teachers and students. However in the long run it will be beneficial to everyone.” Ms. Johnson senior English teacher says.

Beyond the challenge, this system is more than exciting to Wirt-Emerson students for lots of reasons.

"A block scheduling is an excellent idea and will be great in readying students for our chosen pathways to college and beyond." Terrell Bond Junior of 2016 says.

Delawrence Nixon of the class of 2016 also says "Block scheduling is a different experience for our students here and grants them the opportunity to join more clubs and extracurricular activity."

With this new system running students now have more time to enjoy the things that make them unique. Thanks to this system, the 2015-2016 school year has a great chance of being the best one yet!

Honor Society plans for a year of fun!

The honor society at Wirt-Emerson is built entirely of academic leaders who stride through the art stained halls in their all white with navy blue and gold medallions that shine so brightly looking directly at them could make you blind. They are decorated not only with their gorgeous medallions but also with the wrath of their caring hearts beating directly through their white attire,

These academic elites take pride in their academic achievements and also plan several activities to help make our school the best it can be.

"This year we plan on giving the student body more community service oriented activity. To help them to gain community service hours." says Nataija Johnson the President of the NHS. “We want to open a student bookstore where students can buy student supplies, spirit wear, and healthy snacks.”

To top off these extraordinary ideas for the year, the honor society also plans to expose students to after highschool endeavors. “We plan to expose students to more college options and gear them for college readiness. Also, we want to shed light upon Indiana colleges whose lights have been dimmed." Overall the honor society plans on contributing to the making of an awesome school year!

Teacher in Distinction

A teacher in distinction carries a sparkle in their eyes that twinkles so unapologetically there's no way you can ignore it. They flex their intellect, intelligence, grace, wisdom, and overall their heart in everything they do. Ms. Angela Johnson a 12th-grade English teacher at Wirt-Emerson without a single drop of doubt embodies the very definition of a teacher in distinction with every thing she does. Ms. Johnson is like a walking heart, beating in every “Good Morning” and “Good afternoon” she utters to a passing student.

Her heart beats in every sentence of wisdom she conveys to her student. Her heart beats in every reassuring grin during Socratic seminars. Her heart beats when she twinkles in her pink and green painting every girl who looks up to her in AKA.

Walking into Ms. Johnson’s classroom is like walking into an English wonderland. The neon colors brighten your mood in a single glance and Ms. Johnson sits at her desk with a smile that runs away all your troubles. Her voice, when she speaks, is music to a student’s ears engaging them to hear what she’s saying because she’s so passionate about it.

"The overall atmosphere when you walk into class inspires you to want to learn. She's the type of teacher that students can relate to and understand." Taylor Howard says. Ms. Johnson is like an English wizard using her magical wand to swing knowledge into every student personally so that they leave with something to ponder. “There could never be a day where I'd walk into Ms. Johnson’s class with a frown and not leave smiling."

Nataija Johnson adds that Ms. Johnson with her charm, wit and warm heart is definitely one of the many people who make our schools atmosphere feel like home.

A Student with Sun for a Smile

A smile, some may see it as just a face made when taking a picture. Maybe people see a smile as just an emotion, or maybe we view it as just a sign of happiness. Maria Alice Hardy a senior at Wirt-Emerson has a sun for a smile. A smile is so much more than an emotion. A smile is like a sun on earth wrapping warmth around people who feel cold in their day. A smile wraps its arms around you and tells you "everything will be alright".

Maria walks through the halls of Wirt-Emerson brightening everyone's day and warming everyone's heart with her pearly white teeth glimmering in the dim lights. She smiles at every passing student as a reminder that their day will get better. She smiles when she’s having a bad day or even when she’s sad. She extends positivity into every soul she encounters. Maria is a proclaimed honor student and takes pride in boosting up her friends.

"Being a friend of Maria's is a blessing. There's never a day when I'm around her and I'm not smiling or laughing." Itesiah Hunter says.

There's something about a person who makes everyone around them happy that draws you to them.
