#1StudentNWI: Shaping Minds and Character at South Central

What’s recently happened?
Recently at South Central, the varsity boys and girls basketball teams were competing in the Porter County Conference, or PCC. Although the teams did not make it to the finals, they put up a good fight. The boys varsity team made it to round two, and the girls to round one.

Katie Zabel, Boys Basketball Team Manager said, "It was the hardest that I have seen the boys play and I am very proud of them."

South Central's cheer and Rockettes team also did extremely well!

Rockettes teammate, Adi Pataky, said, "This year, the Rockettes worked very hard on our PCC performance. I’ve enjoyed being on a team with these girls because throughout the season, they’ve become some of my best friends! Teamwork is the key to success, and it’s easy to work together when you’re doing what you love while dancing with your best friends!"

Although PCC is over, there are still a few more games right around the corner.

What’s coming up?

1Student-SC-Jan-2018-02Coming up at South Central is a combination of the last few basketball games, the 100th day of school celebration for the elementary students, and the Snow King and Queen dance this weekend.

Gillian Mertz, a first grader, explained the 100th day of school:

"We have to dress up as one hundred-year-old people to celebrate the hundredth day of school.”

The two games that are most anticipated this basketball season are the JV and Varsity double-header against La Crosse High School, which will be held this Thursday and Friday. Lastly, the Snow King and Queen dance is to be held this Saturday after Saturday’s basketball game - it's the high school's second dance this school year. During the basketball game, the votes for Snow King and Queen will be coming in as well. Good luck to all the running contestants.

Student Spotlight: Kaylie Pacione

1Student-SC-Jan-2018-03Kaylie Pacione, a freshman at South Central High School who happens to love, “The Breakfast Club”, is working her hardest to be the best she can be. Kaylie is involved in Cheerleading, Spanish Club, and Student Council. Her favorite is Cheerleading.

Pacione said, “Cheer is probably my favorite. I get to enjoy many fun practices and games with amazing people.”

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her friends, family, and dogs. When it comes to academics, her favorite class is Spanish. She enjoys it because it’s fun to learn something new.

“Mr. Scheck is my favorite teacher, he is a great teacher and he manages to make his class enjoyable. On top of that, he is really funny,” said Pacione.

When it comes down to the heart of South Central, Kaylie loves the atmosphere.

“It’s a small school with great people and staff,” Pacione said.

When it comes to her future, she has some awesome goals. She plans to become an RN after attending Purdue University. Someone that inspires her to succeed is Barack Obama.

Pacione said, “He inspires me to succeed so much - he is such a great person who has done many great things!”

When giving advice to the students coming into high school next year Pacione said, ”Don’t procrastinate or wait until the last minute to do your homework, or your projects. Definitely don’t forget to study!”

Teacher Spotlight: Melissa Gilchrist

1Student-SC-Jan-2018-04Melissa Gilchrist, a math teacher at South Central, has been teaching for 18 years. Outside of school, her hobbies include anything sports related. Her favorite sports teams are Notre Dame’s Women’s Basketball team along with Notre Dame's Football team.

Gilchrist said, “I enjoy teaching because it’s a way to help shape young minds."

Before she started teaching at South Central, she spent one year teaching at La Porte High School. She loves teaching here at South Central because the students are always willing to learn and are respectful.

“My favorite part about teaching at South Central is the close interactions I have with the students, the students are really hard working,” said Gilchrist.

If she wasn’t a teacher, she would be a physical therapist.

“I have always enjoyed helping people - that’s why I chose to be a teacher. Being a physical therapist would just be another way of giving back to people," said Gilchrist.

She also has been involved as a coach on the Robotics team.

Gilchrist said, “It’s different. I have always been sports-oriented and doing something that focuses more on academics and putting academics into a competition is different. It’s neat to see the kids be successful in an area outside of athletics.”

Outside of school, she enjoys working out at the gym, spending time with her husband and dogs, and watching sports. Lastly, she leaves us with one small piece of advice - never give up.
