#1StudentNWI: November Recap at Wheeler High School

Wheeler High School has officially completed its first trimester of the 2015-2016 school year. We are proud of all the students and wish the best of luck starting the second trimester. Moreover, we have had some great memories since the beginning of school and are looking forward to the bright future.

To begin, we would like to congratulate the Bearcat Theater Company for its fantastic production of Clue: The Musical. Conducted by Auditorium/Drama Director John Hanaway, the cast members included the following students: Marcos Buslon as Mr. Boddy, Jenna Giorgi as The Detective, Tino Seahorn as Mr. Green, Noah Janowski as Colonel Mustard, Aaron Hardison as Professor Plum, Lauren Aldaba as Mrs. White, Hayley Johnson as Mrs. Peacock, Sid Machura as Miss Scarlett, and Game Show Attendants Remington Hess, Kori Brogden, and Gabby Starcevic. For more information on upcoming productions, please visit http://www.bearcattheatre.com/.

In terms of general news, there will be a call out for the Fine Arts Academic Team on Wednesday, November 18th in Miss West's room at 2:50 PM; see Miss West or Ms. Hardesty if you're interested.

Next, Mrs. Horan would like to note to all students to return all overdue library materials as soon as possible to avoid fines. On Saturday, November 14th, Indiana University Northwest will be hosting its “Careers in Health Care” session, and any students interested for more information should see Mrs. Day in the Guidance Office. On this same date, Key Club members should see Ms. Jarosz if they are interested in helping with the UTMS Neighborhood Food Drive from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M., or they can go to St. Elizabeth Seton to help stock the food.

We appreciate all the support from our participating Wheeler High School students. Lastly a reminder for Wheeler High School seniors, it is not too early to create your application for your “Dollars of Scholars” scholarship. The deadline is April 1st, so please see the website uniontownship.dollarsforscholars.org if you have any questions.

I would like to give a student shout out to Wheeler High School senior Joel O’Shea. On November 12th, Joel was awarded the Post-Tribune Athlete of the Month, where he will be featured in Suburban Tribune printed editions next week.

We would like to thank everybody for supporting Joel in the poll, where he had a poll percentage of 51.58%; the other competitors were Alaina Chacon of Crown Point High School with a poll percentage of 44.45%, and Logan Ferngren of Valparaiso High School with a poll percentage of 3.97%. Additionally, Joel was qualified to compete at State, where he received 34th in a time of 16:02.1 in Cross Country.

This makes Joel the fastest Bearcat in school history at the state meet! Wheeler High School congratulates Joel for all of his incredible accomplishments during his cross country seasons.

Lastly, I would like to give a teacher shout out to Mr. Ben Boruff. He graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana with a degree in English Education and attained an English as a New Language (ENL) license addition.

Since 2013, Mr. Boruff has worked at Wheeler High School and has also worked for the Upward Bound program of Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) as an English teacher during the summer. Along with being an English teacher for sophomore and senior classes, Mr. Boruff is the Wheeler High School Spell Bowl coach, English Academic Team coach, and WHS National Honor Society director.

Additionally, Mr. Boruff led 2013, 2014, and 2015 Spell Bowl Team to win first place in their class division, and is currently looking forward to leading the English Academic Team to victory this year. Wheeler High School in extremely thankful for Mr. Boruff teaching career and appreciates everything that he has contributed to our school.
